It's beginning to fade away now but was a time when we could all say that there were no two MINIs alike.
It's the alarm light, it flashes when you turn your alarm on. My car has it but I have no alarm on it, just recently discovered that locking my car with the remote didn't mean I had an alarm, just a remote lock key :P. Anyways if you get the alarm installed this will function as an indicator of the alarm.

I thought the same thing when I first bought my '12 MCS - I would go all the way to redline and it wouldn't light up, so I thought it was broken or burnt out bulb, until I came on here and read up on it.
I mean... it IS on the tach after all... are we so wrong for thinking it had something to do with the tach? lol
I would LOVE to have that red light glow or pulse if the doors were locked, just as a theft-deterrent. Sadly, my little red "light" just sits there, doing nothing. A shift-light is an awesome idea, as well! Has anyone done ANYTHING with that red light? I know, it may require some re-programming, but any ideas? Just so fricking lame that it sits there, doing NOTHING.....
Definitely requires some reprogramming to have the light pulse as if you had an alarm (which I heard is simple), practically changing a value from disabled to enabled for "alarm" or something along those lines however who the heck does it around my area? Only God knows :P.
I wondered if the iphone app that allows configuration via the OBD2 might do it but not sure, perhaps if someone knows they can tell us.
I was thinking of putting this light on there

By the way to use this you might need to find a floating ground (does anyone know where to get it from an R56)? A floating ground is practically a wire that turns to ground when the ignition is off, and becomes live when it is on. Hence connecting a positive from the LED to the battery and the ground of the LED to the "Floating ground" will make the LED flash when the ignition is off on the car.

I hope somebody can help me with this old thread.I have a r55 Cooper s. Its a European model. The wiring of the complete alarm system is not installed from factory .I made all the adjustments written in all the topics. So I installed the 2 wires from speg to kombi and coded the tacho and speg (The dwa verbaut lines). When I lock the car with the fob when I am inside and I open a door the hazard lights start blinking. I should think I did the job right but the alarm hardbeat light isn't blinking. Could It be i am missing something? My idea is that I have a Speg where it is not possible to put a fuse for the complete alarm nr F26. Thanks in advance!
