How to Bleed Coolant on N18 Engine?

I searched through this forum, and through Google, and nothing. There is no bleeder on the thermostat housing, and no bleeders on any of the hoses that I've traced.

So what gives? How do you bleed the coolant system on the N18?

Eric

A Bentley manual will be helpful for lots of your future projects. Otherwise, I believe this tech article should be relevant as it states at the tophere (9th paragraph from the bottom). I did find this thread here on NAM about bleeding the R56 cooling system. See if it is helpful as well.

Yeah, a Bentley manual would be nice. I just can't afford the days off from work while I wait for it to come in.

Pelican - I saw your article and all of the NAM threads. However, none of them describes an N18.

You might not be able to wait for it but a vacuum bleeder makes things much easier.

Actually I believe there is a bleeder screw. According to ECS Tuning and Mini Mania the part number for the thermostat housing is 11537647305 for the N18.

See the image. The bleeder screw is plastic and on top of the housing (round top and has x on it)

+1 thats the thermostat housing ( 11537647751 newest part number updated part ) and the bleeder screw , its tucked down in on the top of the engine and sometimes hard to see right beside the engine wire harness. Also the sensor moved a bit.

Here is a shot of the N18 engine on the side with the older design N18 thermostat, the bleeder is in the same location just shorter now. Its in between the vacuum pump and the HPFP, if you have the newer N18 3/2012+ HPFP it will be the smaller looking HPFP.

Looks in between those location from the top of the engine near the valve cover, then use a flat head screw or phillips to twist it out to the bleed procedure., dont twist it all out or the screw with pop out and fall down in the engine bay, just twist it out to you see the bubbling of the coolant when you do the bleed procedure.

Definitely makes sense. It's never fun waiting for things in the mail. The thread I posted post #2 reads:

if you look straight down form the top of the T-stat you will see a slotted bleed screw loosen it.
Glad you got it figured out! Good luck with the process.

Actually, where there is a bleeder screw in the picture I have what looks like a sensor. There is a wire running into it off center, and a slot for a screwdriver opposite the wire. Still functions as a bleeder, and you can't lose the screw because it is attached by the wire.
