Salvage value of blown r56 (n14) engine?

My mini with 108k miles had the no 3 cylinder blow. My dealership is replacing the engine. My question is this, I am told if i want the old engine back, the replacement will be $500 more for a core charge. I would like to work with my sons to rebuild the old engine as a learning project. Is the salvage value worth paying the extra 500 to get the old engine. The water pump was just replaced last year and I am assuming there are some other good parts on the engine. What do you think?

" --- had the no 3 cylinder blow." Depending on how it's blown, you might not want to invest money in it --- a hole in the cylinder wall makes the engine pretty much useless, unless you want to sleeve it as part of the learning process.

Find out from the dealer which parts are to be re-used --- what will the "core" consist of? How many parts will you need to buy to "finish" the learning project?

Then, think about what you'll do with the finished product. Not many will buy a rebuilt used as a learning project. You're pretty much limited to using it yourself.

Just in terms of value, if the cylinder wall is still good, is it worth more than $500?

If you're looking for a motor to rebuild as a "learning experience" there are lots of other motors out there you could pick up for cheap or free off craigslist to rebuild. 1.6 miata motors and 8v VW motors come to mind.
