Over heating issue

Hi All,
This is my first thread, I have a 2010 cooper s. I just recently and sadly had to have a ton of work done...timing chain, oil pan flush, exhaust gasket, new turbo and lines, drive belt and they made me do other maintenance stuff...now I am having an issue where my hood is getting so hot it is causing my hood scoop to dimple. I brought it back to dealer and tell me it fine and it happens sometime but I do not believe them and i feel like this extreme heat is going to cause more damage...they are replacing my hood scoop free of charge but does anyone have an idea of why its getting so hot all of a sudden?

Check to see if the OEM hood insulation has been removed?
Has the turbo heat shield not be reinstalled?

If those are missing, time to install the OEM aluminum heat shield, the sound insulation pad, and the turbo heat shield.

As to why is it running hotter - what oil are you using?
Have you verified the coolant system doesn't have any trapped air?

Yea, I would make sure the original turbo heat Shields are there. It should be there from the factory. These turbo do get hot under the hood.

#17 in the diagram.

Also make sure you have the little line protection shield update.

#20 in the diagram.

Also when you replace the scoop , add the insulation and additional heat shield for protection of the scoop melting. You might have the insulation, but maybe not the meatl part.

Thanks

Adding this insulation mat solved the problem for me...
There's a long thread about this on NAM I think.

We have a link here for the larger insulation mat mod here from the R58 to R56 :

The one above is the smaller easy to replace unit for the hood scoop issues.

Yep this is what I bought in UK about just over 2 yrs ago, around the same price, too.

There was a lot of confusion here and MINI listed only insulation mats with the heat reflector to the rear of the bonnet (designed, I suppose, for the diesel version which has the turbo at the rear of the engine) at first for my R56 N18 MCS.

It was all a bit of a lottery - a 'special order from Germany that couldn't be refunded if it didn't fit' but I ended up with a mat that didn't have a turbo heat reflector at all. It's been doing fine for over 2 years now at doesn't show signs of scorching. Keeps the bonnet/hood absolutely cool...

Where did you get that mat?
I got that same insulation blanket installed during warranty scoop replacement. That was the last thing done to my MCS under warranty.

Mine is part $16.67 (list price) #1 in the diagram below:

Sorry to hear about your troubles - hopefully they were addressed under warranty.
Your engine-bay temps are not a new problem, you've had it all along. It's just that it takes time for the cosmetic air-scoop to get cooked enough to start warping. Virtually all MCS cars have had the scoop replaced, or warped, by the time they hit 5-year mark.

Insulating turbo and/or the scoop area (to protect the cosmetic scoop) may help, a bit, but neither approach addresses the root cause of the problem: the turbo generates a lot of heat, and it has got to go somewhere. The only long term solution is increasing the airflow to cool the engine, and that is not easy: radiator, AC condenser, and turbo inter-cooler block frontal access; air-scoop on the driver side and headlights take up the rest of the room. On the passenger side, you could cut holes in the plastic shroud to replicate air-intake path to feed more cold air to the engine bay. Opening more holes in the air-scoop itself may help as well.

Otherwise, just replace them as they warp.
