It's hard to tell, but the picture of the hood scoop shows how I kept the stock scoop grille, but I used an angle grinder to chop off the back half. Normally this is solid with 3 or so small holes for venting (I think)... Now it serves as the actual intake.
I think adding a different intake increases volume. The stock is fine I am sure at stock boost, but with a tune, I am boosting at 25% more (20 vs 16 psi)., would it not make sense that would increase air needed as well? I don't know how it works, but it does. I noticed a significant bump in WHP with my tune with the Alta vs stock flat filter. Would almost any aftermarket or factory JCW one produce the same results? Probably. I didn't go with the AEM (very well constructed by the way) simply because I didn't want to divert all the air from the hoodscoop from my engine, however, I am sure it would produce the same results. Truth be told about the Alta, once underway, it really only produces temps that are 5* F above IAT (I doubly stock or any other intake performs better). This is acceptable and isn't noticed by the engine considering we compress the air and the send it through the intercooler.

What causes these pops when letting of the throttle, unburned gas?

from what I understand, the injectors add a few extra drops of fuel, which hit the exhaust and explode, I think lol?

Other than the scan gauge II, what options are there for the N18 for gauges? I'd love a boost gauge and AFR gauge!

Can't agree with you there. I use a hi flow panel filter on the stock intake and regularly get ambient temp readings once underway.

Yea in the 70s I see IAT equal ambient, but at 90*, I usually do not see those numbers, but rather, 5* above ambient. There are other factors here such as boost. My car can hold 18psi to redline and I think that has a lot to do with volume of air. When I dynoed it with the stock intake, I noticed a 7WHP difference(less), and this was in 94* high humidity settings. I know putting a high flow filter on will not increase HP, but one thing we can all agree on is a stock MCS/JCW has problems holding onto boost to redline, and me thinks part of this is due to volume of air.

DME is back in, Map A tested for a few pulls, full review coming soon, will be starting a thread for reviews of MarioKarts services.

All I can say about map A is holy crap. The JB has nothing on Manic, also I gotta learn how to load videos to a thread.

I don't think I ever asked this question before, but how much more power does the N18 have over the N14. ptguy0618 I can't believe how quick you went from 55 mph to 80+ mph! Mind blowing!

Power and mechanical differences...

N14 Engine - N14B16AC (171hp / 177 ft-lbs)
* infinitely variable single VANOS (intake only)
* Siemens DME MED17.2 engine management

N18 Engine - N18B16M0 (181hp / 191 ft-lbs)
* infinitely variable double VANOS
* map-controlled oil pump
* variable valve timing (Valvetronic) with 3-phase servomotor and integrated eccentric shaft sensor
* composite camshaft construction
* new piston design
* Siemens DME MEVD17.2.2

It's the Manic Tune! I don't think the HP N14 vs N18 is the differential making the cool speedo movement. The tune works wonders for our cars. My N14 loves it, I love it and I surmise ptguy loves it! When are you getting yours Systemlord?

Thanks. I had driven a Countryman S a month ago and I have no double it would beat down my stock N14, seems like the biggest difference is in the valve-train which would scale nicely with a Manic Tune! The Countryman S N18 definitely felt like a lot more than the extra 10hp and the extra torque gain!

I tried map B today, and I was not ready for it. I spun second gear and a little into third. I still haven't done an E85 blend on A or B, and I still have map C! I'm writing my full review on Tuesday when I'm off work. I'll be as thorough as possible for you guys!

GO BUY A MANIC TUNE!!!

So I have mariokarts DP, and I've had the second cat cut as well, but has anyone cut the resonator on the stock cooper S exhaust as well? And made it a true straight pipe? I don't expect more performance gains from exhaust at this point, just interested in the sound!

You might get a lot of drone without the resonator, the resonator doesn't affect performance.

Can you do the same video, but change the Map to Stock setting? Just to get a comparison

I'm running an OBD2 adapter ($15 Amazon.com ) and Torque Pro App ($5) on an old Evo3D android phone (Bluetooth connection )... whole slew of gauges including MAF, boost, rpm, air/fuel ratio and more. Up to 8 gauges/screen. 6 screens. Check out my pictures in Member Gallery this site.
