Found a fire extinguisher that fits in the door!
Back in 2012 I purchased a 2-pack of NitroStrike Mini-Foamer Fire Extinguishers for $17 from Groupon. They are very similar in size and design to large air dusters. It just so happens that they fit perfectly in the door panel of my 2009 Clubman S (R55) without rattling. It fits both the passenger and driver side. See photos. It may fit the R56 if the door is as large as the R55.
You tear off the tab at the top of the can (just like an air duster), aim, and pull the trigger. The can is labeled for type A (wood, paper, cloth, trash & other ordinary materials) and type B (gasoline, oil, paint, and other flammable liquids), but not type C (electrical). Apparently it sprays a nitrogen foam to extinguish the fire. The can is only 16 oz, so I doubt it would extinguish a very large fire, but I think it is much better than nothing. There are YouTube videos demonstrating the product and it looks effective.
The can is supposed to be stored between 35 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which I suppose could be exceeded inside a closed vehicle, though I've never had a problem with mine and it's been in the car for over a year. I looked at two First Alert ABC fire extinguishers I have inside my house and they are not supposed to be exposed to temperatures above 120F.
The manufacturer's website is not available (nitrostrike.com) and there has been little activity on their Facebook page, but you can still find these extinguishers for sale online for about twice what I paid. I am not affiliated with NitroStrike, but I am excited to share that they fit in my Mini!

I don't smoke while fueling up, and even if I did, the bottle is way too small to make a dent in the resulting inferno.

That is a compact size, found a couple of the vids that show it really does the job quick. Its not regular foam, something different.
Thanks, I will pick one up and get rid of the larger one I have clipped into the back, it is always in the way.
Fire extinguishers can be very useful but they have to be readily available to be of any use. I would say I am careful myself, but a lot of people around me might not be.

nice. i have this same one, but i built a bracket that holds it under my driver seat (theres a thread on it somewhere). i thought the bracket came out great, and i can still move the seat all around; never can hardly tell its even there.
yes, its small, but i figure itll be one of 2 things: tiny fire this can will put out to save my car, or blazing inferno which consumes the entire mini. basically, if i cant put it out, id want the car to roast. no point in having a half baked mini!

you may not smoke while filing up......but what if you get into an accident and somones fuel line is severed, spraying gasoline all over the engine bay.....how about a short in electrical wiring resulting in an electrical fire.....hell, what if you stumble upon somsone elses car on fire, youd have a means to help them.
sure, a small extinguisher wont put out an inferno......its used to put it out before it becomes an inferno.
If most people only knew how useless any fire extinguisher under 5 pounds really is.
I love the NFPA 10 disclaimer on the back of the can LOL

the door is a bad place to store a pressurized can of any type ... think about a collision in that area puncturing the can...

in race cars and in airplanes, fire extinguishers are carried in the central area if the body ... think you are smarter than them? i doubt you are
A 5# fire extinguisher is not really that big.
on the other hand, an otherwise survivable collision could be fatal if the pressurized fire extinguisher explodes and sends shards of metal into your body

compairing racecars and airplanes to a commuter car is compairing apples to oranges.
the only way a canister is going to "burst" is if the integrity of the can is compromised.....and the only way for that to happen is if the door is piereced or punctured...very low risk in an auto collision....
doors are an integral safety feature and are designed to withstand a hit and remain intact.....keeping the shape of the drivers area more or less in one piece
like i said, if you are in a situation where a canister is going to burst......you are in one hell of an accident and that canister is the least of your problems.
In an insured car, the best thing you can when a fire starts is get everyone out and let her burn. And keep do-gooders from attempting to put the fire out !
The damage from the fire + extinguisher chemicals will either total the car, or cause more damage than the fire by itself. No matter what you do, the damage will exceed the deductible. So you might as well ensure that the car is totaled !

I have no idea what that comparison attempts to illustrate (it makes no sense to me at all), but a 2lb fire extinguisher has a discharge time of 8-12 seconds. You wont put out a fire greater than that started by a paper tissue box.

god forbid you have pasengers stuck in the wreckage.....when the car starts to catch fire, and you have 0 means to fight it.
a small extinguisher isnt going to put out a blaze....its not meant to.....its meant to put out a small fire before it becomes a blaze.
that being said, you should always cary the largest extinguisher you can.....most people arent going to carry a 5+lb extinguisher in thier car......and i know personally ide rather carry something than nothing.
