As a lot of areas we are having unusual cold temps, teens today and tomorrow. My 2010 S has been fine, today I drove it on a quick errand and the engine symbol came on when I left. The only unusual thing is the coolant was a touch low and I topped it. The electric cooling fan runs for a long time after shutting off the car. No steam, no liquid on the ground. Let it sit for an hour and the light is still on. Took it for a short drive and the light stays on and the fans run for awhile after shutting off, no change. Any ideas?

If you have a place nearby that will check codes for free I would start there. I just had a very similar problem and had code PO597. It was my thermostat or thermostat housing (haven't picked up the car and heard the final verdict yet).
I recently got a seemingly random CEL and it ended up just being a misfire, I took it to the dealership and they reset the code no problem. The funny thing was that I got the CEL on my way home from the dealership for a coolant leak lol. However the coolant leak didn't throw off a CEL I just figured it out when I noticed my coolant was low and then I drove it and came home with coolant running down the tranny and dripping.

Thanks - it's suppose to warm up to 40 mid-afternoon. I'm going to start it them and see if there is any change. Unusually cold the last 2 days, so I didn't drive it yesterday. It was fine before the cold weather.
Thanks for the tips

Get to your coolant temp. Believe its menu #7. If it shows the temp as *** then its your coolant temp sensor. Same thing happened to mine recently. Crazy easy to replace. PM me if you need a sensor, I bought the wrong one when I went to replace mine.

I recommend you get and OBD2 reader that you can check yourself. I got a simple WiFi one that works with my Iphone.

I'm here for the same thing. 0 degrees today and the yellow CEL came on at start up. Wife says the car seemed low on power (derated). Was wondering if there is a way to get codes on the display, without an OBD? I have been able to do it with every car so far, but haven't fond the trick to the MINI yet. (07 R56). Replaced the overpriced, plastic piece of junk thermostat housing a few months ago with the help of NAM. Thanks for that guys. Enjoyed the 2 month wait for the back ordered part. Getting kind of tired of this cars lack of reliability.
Went to an independent sop and they read the codes and cleared them. For some reason it thought it had reached over 400 degrees engine temp.
Could be the unusual weather/driving circumstance, temp sensor going out or the battery was a little low on charge. Reset and charged battery and it has been fine this week.
