R56 Want to get a new Shift knob
Want to get a new Shift ****
So i'm looking at getting a new shift ****. Has anyone tried to thread their shift rod? I want to get
and i want it to be nice and secure with no play just like the oem mini slift ****. But since there are no threads on our shifter idk how i would go about doing that.
I've cut off and rethreaded shift levers on other cars and it can be done. The MINI shift lever is fairly thick (about 14mm or .55") so you'd have to reduce the diameter of the end of the shift lever before you could thread it to the proper size. My Miata had 10mm threads on the end of the lever which is fairly common. For 10mm, you would first have to reduce the diameter of the shift lever to about .35" and then use a die to cut new threads. That's possible but hard to do without removing the lever from the car. Once removed, the lever could be turned down on a lathe or you could go old school and do it with a file and a Dremel. Even if you went to 12mm threaded you'd still have to remove a lot of material. Good luck.

Can we confirm that it is 14mm? if so i have a suuuuper easy solution to my problem. Thread the 14mm shifter and use a 14mm female to 12mm male adapter but i might have to cut the shifter a tad bit so it doesn't sit higher.
After reading your original thread, I pulled my shift **** and measured the end of the unthreaded lever with an inexpensive dial caliper and got 14mm. Go pull yours and double check but I'm pretty sure 14mm is correct.
Thank you! i'm going to cut down the shifter so the new shifter starts right where the oem one starts. these are the two pieces i ordered
14mm female to 12mm male it's not exactly what it's designed for, but i figure if i thread the shifter, smother it in red loctite it will not go anywhere. then i'll use blue loctite for this beauty i found. i'm pumped and will probably write up a diy for it.

I'm a little confused. Your link doesn't show two pieces, only one. Are you going to use two adapters: one to step down from the 14mm lever to 12mm and a second adapter to step down to 10mm? Are you going to remove the lever from the car to do the work? I don't know how difficult it is to remove the lever but that would make it much easier to work on. If I were doing the job, I think I'd cut down the lever for 12mm threads (about .46" dia) and then use one adapter to step down to 10mm to screw into the shift ****. Sounds like an interesting project, keep us informed.

the shift **** i linked is 12x1.25 so since the shifter is 14mm i only need a 14mm female to 12mm male adapter. so i'm going to cut the shift **** down. Thread it and then use the adapter to attach the shift ****. I plan on doing it while the shifter is in the car. shouldn't be too hard. just make sure I cut the shifter square so it's easy to thread. I might use a pipe cutter to start the cut then finish with a hack saw or something of the sort. Put down some newpaper and painters tape to collect the metal shavings. Then get a pipe threader and go to town. when it's done cover the shift lever and the adapter in red loctite. let it cure and then put blue loctite on my shift **** and voila. shouldn't be too difficult but i have a tendancy of bad things happening to easy projects.
