R56 Random Misfires, etc
#2
Looks like multiple misfires....
Could be bad gas like you guessed...
But I have a question...
Ever get the valves cleaned? I'm thinking you might have a carbon issue....I am not a gen2 owner...but total miles seems to be about where many folks have this issue.
Guess the plugs could have an issue with wear/age....but carbon seems much more common on the early direct injected motors....
Good luck!

The bad gas could be the issue....I did have a similar problem with intermittent misfires that I traced down to a bad coil. I just swapped the coil that misfired from cylinder 2 to cylinder 3 and waited to see if the fault followed the suspect coil. Sure enough it did follow so I replaced it and all is well after 12K miles.

Alright guys. Need some major help here.
2008 Mini Cooper S. 59k and some change.
In August the vacuum pump failed, housing, etc, as well as valve cover and gasket were replaced.
Took car from California to Arizona for school, ran fine on the way there. Past few weeks until a few days ago had been running fine.
Oil and coolant level are in between where they should be.
Problem: Last few days I would start the car and it would just rumble and die. Again, rumble die. 3rd or 4th try it would start up, run fine but would throw codes for multiple misfires on multiple cylinders as well as a body code. (Probably due to the misfires)
Theory: Bad Gas. During this time with the problem the gas has been at less than half a tank closer to a quarter tank. Boneheaded realization was that I filled up with premium gas from Circle K. (Was in a rush to pick someone up)
I know our Mini's are picky when it comes to gas, today i went to go pick up food, same problem with start up but went to the nearest Chevron and filled up there. Back in august when I took the car in to get work done I was told the Spark Plugs should be replaced eventually. (By 60k)
So my question is the following: Could these start up issues be caused by some bad gas, spark plugs, or am I looking at an entirely new monster?
Literally the past few days ive had this problem, never had it stumble like this in the 4 months ive owned the car, filled up tonight, drove about 15 miles on the tank, ran fine. After trying to start the car up after the first time today (At the gas station for example or where i got food) It starts up fine, no problems at all. I should also note that gas mileage seems where it should be and its estimated mileage left seems correct as far as i can tell.
Only mods include DoS intake, Res delete. and noise maker delete. Havent had a problem due to any of them so it seems.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Theories? (See below for actual codes from the log)
Thank you for your help in advance!

My car did this too, it ended up being the electronic thermostat that tells the car what kind of "start condition" it needs to start in. So it thinks the car is warm (when its cold) so it leans out the fuel and the car dies and stalls until the car is warmed to the proper level the failing thermostat is telling the car it needs to lean the fuel to....or something to that effect...

Yeah, I still think it's the HPFP. MINI's standard of practice (presumably this is a corporate directive to make some repair money) is to always first say that this problem is due to dirty valves (and then offer very expensive valve cleaning).
I know that some others have found the problem was the thermostat (in fact my local MINI specialist has diagnosed it to a faulty temperature sensor on the t-stat on some cars and tried replacing just that part for me). Needless to say, that didn't solve the problem.
Despite that, I really think these are classic symptoms of the HPFP. My recommendation is that you either check the codes yourself with a BMW-specific code reader (not all readers will get the BMW-specific 2880 high pressure fuel system code) or make the dealer show you the codes they get. In person. Note that the HPFP code might not show up right away. Unfortunately, MINI's policy is never to change the HPFP until the code appears. And of course that means lots of cars driving around for weeks (months?) on sometimes dangerously lean engine conditions while you wait for the code.
Yes, I'm a little angry at MINIs policies. Not enough to sell the car, but enough to seriously think I might not be back after this one.
For your problem: good luck. I hope you're able to resolve it quickly. Come back and let us know what the final resolution is.

Great. That was just what I thought it was going to be. Glad to be you'll be getting fixed-up soon.
Really though, your story is far from unique. Mini's policy of denying HPFP problems and trying to up-sell valve cleaning is disingenuous and deplorable. The average owner who is willing to take the dealerships advice instead of spending hours on internet research is going to get taken, usually for over $1k in unnecessary (at least it's rarely the ause of the cold start problem, even if the valves are dirty) "repairs".
Great customer service MINI! We'll done.
Edited to add: not to mention the potential damage done by possibly driving around for months with leAn engine conditions and misfires while waiting for MINI to admit an HPFP problem.
End rant

Thanks for the info. I joined about a week ago right after I bought my used MCS. I'm still finding my way around the car and the forum, and I do appreciate the help. I'm waiting for the maintenance history and documentation to be sent from the previous owner. As mine is a '07 with 111K+ miles on it I wasn't sure if I qualified for the service.
