R56 Question on my new(ish) 2010 S
Question on my new(ish) 2010 S
Last 10yrs had an 03 MC....now, just got a 10 MCS...so I'm a rookie with the turbo engine.
A couple of times in the last 2 weeks, after my 45 min commute home from work, I parked the car in my garage (well, I do that every night)...but 2 times, about 5 mins later I heard a noise in the garage....go in here and a engine fan is on. It's off when i turn the car off, but turns itself on in 5 mins+. Both time I pushed the Engine button to turn on the electronics, then hit it again to turn them off and the fan went off with them.
Is this a normal thing for a turbo?
Thanks for any input

When it is even warm outside and I have driven even remotely hard my 2009 will run the fan after shutdown for a few minutes to reduce under hood temps. When mine does this the fan comes on immediately after shutdown. It seems odd/different that yours waits 5 minutes before turning on.
You will also notice a small electric aux coolant pump that runs to cool turbo bearing housings for about 5 mins after shutdown. There was a recall on this pump for a fire hazard. I am not sure that your model year was included but check and if included make sure this recall has been taken care of on your car. May be totally unrelated to your fan staying on.

I'm no engineer but putting the hot car in a garage with no air circulation, plus a little heat soak could be enough to trigger the fan on, especially if it was on the edge anyway. With my 08, parked in the garage, I've seen both run times. I'm of the opinion that the only problem with a fan running is if it runs for a long time when obviously it shouldn't be. Turbo aux pump always runs at shut off. It is kind of a hum.

I have a '12 MCS and my fan would stay on after any amount of driving for a few minutes after I shut off the engine. However, it no longer does that after I had the temp sensor recall done on the car...not sure if this relates to a 2010 in anyway tho...
