Normal MPG in a 2nd Gen Cooper S?

Hi,
I'm currently in the process of buying a '08 Cooper S from a private seller. I've been driving it for the past 2 days, and seeing ~31 mpg. He said he averaged 31.6 mpg over the last 2 years. Does this seem abnormally low to anyone? What are you guys getting?

I've had my 09 Mini Cooper S since late december (New Member/Mini Driver) and I get anywhere from 30-33 MPG. I would say that that number sounds correct to me.

That's pretty close to what I get. During the winter I'm closer to 31 mpg, but in summer I can get up to 32-33 mpg on average. I do about 70% highway driving.

Also, remember to keep your Rpm's down to save gas.

My 09 JCW i purchased 14 months ago has averaged 29.7 mpg. Probably 75% city driving. I notice when on the highway mpg can be over 35 if driving around 60 mph but drops to about 30mpg at 75 mph.

Ok, that's good to know. I seem to remember people saying they were getting 35-40 mpg in their S's, but maybe I was wrong. Perhaps I want the regular Cooper instead.

34K miles here, and here's my fuelly. The spike is due to carbon, then carbon cleaning.

Combined I get 32-33 in spring and summer. Normally when temps drop, I get 30-31.

09 S, computer usually indicates 29MPG every tank, 10 mi/trip of 70% hway. +5MPG for long trips, even more for sub legal speeds

I have a 2011S and I've tracked every fillup on Fuelly. Now with 27,527 miles my average is 33.6 and my best tank was 39.2. Obviously there are many variables in play. When I can find a station with real gas without any ethanol my mileage goes up!!!

With some moderation, low speeds, and mostly flat freeways I have coaxed 35+ from my 2012 MCS a few times. Looking at my fuel log app...routinely is 31-32 mpg (across 20k+ miles).

HTH. I still find it astonishing, given the level of performance these provide.

Fuel type, condition of the vehicle (especially tire pressures, alignment, and type), outside temperatures, and (especially!) driving style all affect fuel economy.

Expect the best mileage if you're using E0 (100% gasoline, no ethanol), with a car in good condition, alignment close to 0 on all the angles, LRR tires pumped up to the pressure on the sidewall, in warm weather, with a light foot and lots of efforts made to never change speed. Some of those are more practical changes to make than others.

My average is 26 mpg lol I enjoy driving my car and have no interest in striving to achieve 500 miles on a tank or 40+ mpg
That is boring
Also most of my driving is city and about 10 miles a day highway which is at speed of 75-80 so I think my average is good compared with other cars and same driving habit

Feel free to provide me what gas stations don't carry ethanol? I use Shell religiously.

Are you guys calculating manually, or via on-board computer? What are people's average speeds over the same period according to the computer?

I'm at 27.9 MPG average over the last ~10k miles, calculated manually (iPhone app!); the computer consistently reads about 1 MPG higher. My average speed is ~33mph. I cruise at around 65-70 MPH most of the time.

90% of the time I'm driving granny style (easy acceleration, moderate speeds, conservation of momentum) and have only broken 30MPG on a tank once - and that was on a road trip. I'm always amazed at some of the mileage people are getting. Driving style/conditions play a huge factor.

Ask and ye shall receive: http://pure-gas.org/

Matoskah is absolutely correct in saying a hi-performance engine like the MCS will not only run better but get significantly higher gas mileage with ethanol-free gasoline.

2013 roadster and my best tank so far has been 35.7 mpg. I get better gas mileage in the upper rpm's with the N18 motor. If I drive like a grandma my mileage drops to 32-33.

Unfortunately there aren't any ethanol-free gas stations near me but when I find them while traveling I'm happy. My mileage is always calculated manually. This is a great site for recordkeeping. www.fuelly.com

"Normal" people driving in mixed city/highway driving to and fro work, 31-ish before the NM tune. Amazingly, after the tune, I get 32-ish doing mundane driving. However... hard to keep the foot out of the peddle after the tune and with the rumble of the exhaust!!!

thats about my average too.. I have a heavy foot and getting out of Center City and on to 95 impacts my MPG's.. plus its so boring trying to keep the RPM's low!

Whenever I fill up I tell myself I want to try and make it last longer, each time after about 5 miles I get bored and motor around
If I wanted something purely for gas mileage I would've gotten a Prius, I bought something I could have fun in, and get pretty good gas mileage for my driving habits. I know my friend has a speed 3 and averages 16, I will gladly take 26 over 16
