R56 Normal MPG in a 2nd Gen Cooper S?
I drive about 10 miles to work everyday and average about 25mpg. When I'm on the highway I drive pretty fast (70-80mph) and average about 30mpg. I bet if I drove slower I could get around 35mpg.
Oh, and two weeks ago I participated in a track day. My last time out on the track (25 minutes) I reset the mpg and averaged 11.7! lol

Around 30-31 mpg was quite normal for my 2011 MCS (75% freeway, 15% city). I did drag a gear to 4k rpm or more most of time.
Ever since I got JCW tuning kit, the # is down to 24-25 mpg range, I think because I'm just more throttle-happy and revving up higher, although officially the kit or even the fJCW shouldn't affect the MPG numbers on paper. When I go regular weekend diving trip with cruise control and mellow freeway ride, I still get just about the same # as plain MCS.
When I got to mountains in the weekends, I often get 14-17 mpg during the fun time.
So I think it's really really depending on your driving habit.

Probably easily fixed by installing a short-shift kit.Anyway, to each their own. I'm a new Mini owner myself. Met a woman this weekend who had a 'partial' JCW. It was an auto but you could run it as a manual and it had those paddle shifters on the steering wheel to boot. Made me all confused.
I'm getting about 33.5 mpg and I drive very mixed driving. Also should mention I don't baby it and always use 93 octane.
I don't qualify under the term "normal" for MPG, but 95% of my driving is hiway & cruise control. Sure, I punch it once in awhile, just not often. I'm averaging between 35 - 40 MPG as calculated by the pump and odometer. I credit the engine design --- "Vanos", or variable timing feature. Performance is there when requested, otherwise it's in the economy mode. Best available gas is 91 Octane, and tires are about 36psi. Not unusual to get 500 miles per tank of gas, but that's with only one "red tick" on the gauge too --- one of my bad habits.
The one time it was on a track - MiniThunder III, in Willows, CA, I was between 10 - 15MPG. Learned a lot that day!
As mentioned earlier, mileage will vary with driving style.

What are the ramifications of running your tank that low? I get more fuel somewhere when the car dings at me the first time and the second. So, somewhere between 50-80 miles left according to its estimate.
Only ramification I know of is the possibility of the gauge being wrong. Living in the boondocks, gas stations are few and far between. When I bought the car a couple years ago, I had a 5-gal gas can in the "trunk", and purposely took the gas gauge down to indicate less than 10 miles remaining. So, I'm comfortable with 2 red ticks, but it drives my spouse crazy --- therefore "bad habit!"
Hope you reset your TPMS. Might warn you next time the tires are low.
Funny, blocking the grille partly or even completely (!!!) is something that people usually do to increase MPG. I'm surprised to hear yours increased.
Their comment was that blocking that grill forces the engine to run hotter and less efficiently.
I have several ethanol free stations to choose from on my commute. On each vehicle I have used, I have gained 8% in MPG when switching from E10. '99 Accord V6, '03 Buell XB9SL, and now my Mini is just on it's third tank and I can only assume the full tank it came with was E10. My commute MPG is up to 32.5 on the last tank. My commute is mixed with an average of about 28mph, 25 miles each way.
At 850 miles, I averaged a little over 32 MPG on my last tank in mostly rural driving. Since I got the car 3 weeks ago, the overall average is a tick over 31. I have to say that I never expected a car to be this fun and economical at the same time!
Still on my dealer fill after picking it up last week but the BC is reporting 36.5 mpg over about 350 miles so far. On my '09 S that thing ran 2-3 mpg optimistic so I'm likely around 34 mpg in reality. Rural, suburbs, no stop-and-go and only been on the highway once.
No ethanol here at all, period, which is a big plus.

I'm getting about 27mpg, appetites driving, but mostly urban streets with lots of stop and go.
Going to try the seafoam treatment for carbon build up and change the plugs to see if it gets better
