Coolant Leak Problem - Warranty Just Expired

Hey all,

I have a 2009 MC JCW with 39500 miles on it.

Yesterday, I was driving on a highway and a engine overheat message came up on my screen, and then realized that the coolant was leaking.

I'm guessing it's either the thermostat or water pump.

The problem is, my warranty expired on 02/02/2013 (still have less than 50K miles though). It's really frustrating that this happens less than a month after the warranty expiration.

Should I just go to a private mechanic to fix this, since doing it at a dealer will cost a lot more?
Or should I go to a dealership and try asking them to honor the warranty and fix this on a goodwill? If so, should I discuss about it before I leave my car at the dealership or after?

What do you guys think is the best way?
Thanks in advance for any comments and advice.

Try to see if the dealer will help out. A month out they might be able to. If you have any wrench skills you might want to fix it yourself.

I ordered the replacement housing from :
http://www.koperformance.com/
approx $100

and had a local mechanic replace it. Took him about 2hours in my driveway faster I'm sure if it was a garage)

We are seeing leaky water pumps on 56s more often now. Part from MINI is about $180, we get $255 for the work plus coolant.

Hey guys do I have a 2009 hatchback S sand yesterday I noticed a large amount of coolant spilled so I jacked the car up and saw where it was from seemed to be the thermostat housing and came across this post so I went to Creviermini and talked to my service advisor Jason and he said that if it was that then it would be covered under the emission warranty which is 7 years or 70,000 so I ca got called today and it was the thermostat and the water pump and it was all replaced for free the water pump had been replaced about a year ago so it got replaced for free since they come with a two year guarantee ..
