Warning light after replacing battery

The battery on my '07 MCS died last night, so today I replaced it with Interstate battery that's compatible with this car. Now I get a warning "increased battery discharge", and the time keeps reset. After I replaced the battery, I let it idle for a good 10 min but only drove about 2 miles to the gym and back. Do I just need to drive longer distance to charge? Can I just hook up my battery tender overnight? Or should I bring it to the shop, since I read here that IBS may get messed up after battery replacement?

I just swapped my 07 MCS battery and didn't have any of these issues. I would put the battery on the tender until fully charged, make sure you tightened the terminals down tight.

See what happens. If the same issue continues it could be due to battery dying because of some phantom drain issue ...

Believe it or not it could be a bad new battery. Take it to Advance Auto if you have one as they have a machine that can test the charging system and let you know if there is a drain somewhere.

A few months ago I replaced my original battery in my 2007 S with a direct Mini replacement and did not get any codes. Everything worked fine and no problems to date of any kind.

Happy to report that after hooking the new battery up to the battery tender overnight, the error msg went away the next morning.

FYI the battery is suppose to be registered to the car computer when replaced, so this could be part of your problem, but need the BMW computer to do it.

Way how about an explanation for everyone on why this needs to be done.

Bought my wife's 07 Cabrio in June. Battery shot craps 3 days later on a trip. I replaced it in O'rielly's parking lot and have never had a problem. The battery in my 08 is 5 years old in August but connections look a little different. May have to take to dealer 160 miles away for programming. But not sure. Oh, Baron MINI did reimburse us for the battery which was cool!

We have the software to reprogram/reset yhe battery... Tripometer at my shop.
From what I understand. As the battery ages the car changes it's charging rate to the battery. I would guess slowing down current as the battery ages since it is losing capacity.
Correct me if I am wrong. This is done on a lot of BMWs too.

So why does it need to be registered to the car with a special computer?

I don't think it is that the battery needs to be registered. I believe it is just a kind of counter that times and monitors the battery that needs to be reset. Not sure why they wouldn't make it so you could do it your self like the rest of the service lights.

We have just received the software. So I am still learning about it. It is done through the obd2 port and a laptop. It's called Bavarian technic if you want to read up on it.

I see nothing on there that mentions resetting or reregistering a battery. So please once you figure out the software, post your info to help your fellow MINIacs understand why this needs to be done. Thx

Will do! I will search around I remember seeing another thread on it a couple weeks ago. Not sure what forum it was in. If I find it I will post a link in here. Sorry I can't spread more light on the subject yet.

Register a battery? Sounds like 'open your wallet' to me.

Registering the battery replacement

Why register the battery replacement?
After fitting a new battery, the service function 'Register battery replacement' should be run. Registration of the battery replacement is necessary to notify the power management (software in the engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery has been fitted in the vehicle.
Without registration of the battery replacement, the power management does not run properly and this can lead to function limitations, for example reduction or deactivation of individual consumer units.
Register battery replacement
This function informs the power management in the DME/DDE of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:
  • The current kilometre reading is stored for the battery replacement.
  • The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted.
  • The power management is initialised.
Replacing the battery: other battery capacity or AGM battery
As the battery depends on the engine ands options fitted, the following information is coded in the CAS:
  • Battery capacity (for example 90 Ah)
  • Battery type: AGM battery or lead-acid battery.
In the case of battery replacement, in general the battery capacity used as series standard may be used.
On installation of a battery with higher or lower capacity or installation of an AGM battery, Progman must be used to recode the CAS:
  • With Progman, run the retrofit ”Battery” (select battery capacity of the fitted battery).
  • Register additional battery replacements with this service function.

Like I said, 'open your wallet'. Do you register your pants with your underwear when you put them on in the morning? I'm outta here.

Sure if you go to the dealer. We don't even charge that service with battery install.

Please confirm that the battery can be registered by the Bavarian Technic software. If it can, it might convince me to buy the Bavarian Technic software.

You don't charge for it because it is not needed? Where do you work and where is your shop?

I can not find anywhere that it states MINI's have adaptive charging and power management systems like BMW's.

Here is a thread about changing the battery. Some people have changed the battery with zero issues.

This was posted further above. But people are still changing their batteries without doing this and without any problems.
