what is it?

 

It's the factory alarm. Press the lock button and you will see it turn on and off. It reminds me of Knight Rider lol

 

Ejection seat warning light.
Under the correct conditions, it will illuminate at 88 mph.
Alarm light for those so equipped.
Indicates Skynet has attained self awareness.
Blinks if passenger seat is wet.
Put on Pink Floyd, laser show is self activated.

Like an NS-5, when the red light is on it indicates your MINI is receiving an update from VIKI. Please follow your MINI's directions for your own safety.

Interesting. I didn't know I had an alarm. Should it also make a noise, blink the lights or fire lasers if an intruder is detected (i.e. how can I tell that it's doing anything, or ready to do so)?

I don't have an alarm and I have the red light. Doesn't blink when I lock the car that I have noticed.

Guessing that it is standard for tach and only works with alarm package.

 

Dealer told me it was the heart beat of my Mini. Just don't forget to put the windows up all the way before locking the car. Sent mine into arrhythmia!

 

I agree. Every car has the red lens, it lights up only if you have the factory alarm system.

Kinda, sorta... Up to model year 2011?, you can program the light (with NCS Expert or equivilent) to blink when you lock the car. Also you can program to close windows with the fob...
