@ startup => lost clock and trip odometer readings

Ok I did a search and found nothing... It gets more weird...

Last Sunday we went out to my '08 MCS directly after church and I started the engine. In the tach cluster I saw an image of the car on a lift, then my clock and trip odometer went " ------- ".

I have the Torque app on my android phone and I did a scan of my OBDII ports. The results said no issues.

I reset the clock and the car has been fine until...

We got out of church today and we went to my MCS. I started the car and low and behold my clock and trip odometer went " ------ ". I did the OBDII scan and no issues.

Has anyone observed this issue? My factory warranty is up this month and I'm starting to sweat.

Obviously not knowing all the details, check the fuse to your OBD slot in the fuse panel.

I had a similar incident this weekend and the fuse blew.

Just a suggestion....

I had this same thing happen once when I left the blue tooth OBD adapter on my car while the car was off (trip,MPG, all cleared). I have since always taken the adapter off when the car is off and never had it happen again. If you look at the adapter when the car is off you will notice the LEDs are still on (active). I hope this helps...

Check your battery. if it is going bad it can cause all kinds of strange things to happen. Read all the threads on this subject thru out the boards and you will see what i mean.

This should not be a problem. The ODBII power will go off after 15-30 minutes depending on a number of factors such as a bluettoh phone call and other options in the car.

My ODBII bluetooth adapter has been in the car and attached to the ODBII port form more than two years without a single problem.

I don't think your MINI likes church. J/K not sure what the issue could be though.

You've got an 08. First thing I'd suspect is the battery is going. Weird things happen when the battery is weak.

Did you have the battery tested first to make sure? I believe the original OEM batteries are white in color and should be vented as well. If it is the battery you don't have to buy an OEM battery at a higher price. You just need a vented type 47 battery. Obtainable at most auto parts stores for around $100 to $120.

So I ended up buying a new battery last week and it seemed the gremlin(s) went away (auto down/up now functions fine, and haven't had my cars computer lose it's mind...

Until last night...

I locked my car at my sons t-ball game, and after the game I went out to the car and the rear barn doors wouldn't open. Turns out my clock and trip were all reading "====".

Very frustrating.

I am now wondering if it is the OBDII bluetooth adapter. It's always plugged in and I always use it. I also hard wired my cellphone charger into the cigarette fuse panel socket. Other than that nothing has changed on my car.

I hate to break it to you but I think you wasted your money on the battery. If you notice in my early reply I had the same exact issue and in my case it was simply the OBDII adapter. Just remove it every time you shut the car down and I bet your problem is eliminated. It sucks but I believe it is the nature of the adapter to continue to talk to the ECU after shut down. Keep in mind the OBDII plug is always powered even when the key is off. In the future when a problem appears always check your latest modification/repair and work your way backwards

Elsinorej - My'08 battery was due to be replaced eitherway. My multi-meter show'd it at just under 11v. You were right about the adapter as well. Thanks!

I"m glad I could help. I'm sure that by mentioning it I will need a new one as well (knock on wood), but my MCS build 4/2007 still has the original battery holding up great. One other thing to watch out for is the left tail light stayed lit among the other symptoms with the OBDII adapter plugged in as well. The only way to shut it off was to insert the key, start the engine and shut it off. Totally weird I know.

Did the new battery solve the problem?

Sorry to revive an old thread....

I have the same exact symptoms....even when I leave my ScanGauge unplugged. My clock, date, trip, avg MPG, and avg MPH all go to --. It's happening with regularity now....almost every time I start the car. The ScanGauge reads 14.2 volts idling with the lights off and 14.0 volts with the lights on...it starts fine regardless of ambient temperature. The battery is about 18 months old and the terminals are clean and tight.

I've looked at several other threads and it appears that the most common cause for this is the battery....but since my battery appears to be okay, I wonder if you had another cause such as a bad ground, a fuse, alternator, regulator, or ??......

What is an OBD II Bluetooth adapter

Hi,
I am reading all the post about the clock resetting to " ---- " I too am having the same problem. My battery is 3+yes old and it's starting up my MCS great but what I would like to know is what is an OBDII Bluetooth adapter and what is it used for? Do I have this? I never seen this. I do have a battery contained Bluetooth adapter that enables me to play my tunes from my smartphone via using AUX jack.
Help me out on what this OBDII Bluetooth adapter is and what it does.

Many thanx

An ODB-II adapter is for communicating with various computer computer components within the vehicle for diagnostic or modification purposes. For example, if the check engine light were on in your car, a technician would connect to the ODB-II port to read the code from the vehicle's computer. Some settings are changed through the ODB-II port via special software from BMW and other vendors. Bluetooth ODB-II adapters allow vehicle owners to read various codes from cell phones or tablets with apps such as ODB Fusion.
