Dead Instrument Cluster

Hi,
I'm new to the forums, today I had a pretty crazy experience that I wish to share and hopefully help someone out.
Last year we bought a used 2012 R55 Clubman S auto with only 12k miles for my wife. The car has been great and we totally LOVE it, in the 8 months and 12K miles that we have owned it I have only done a couple oil/filter changes, coolant flush, and basic checkups on the car. No iissues whatsoever.
The oil / brake fluid service reminder light came on so I decided to reset them. I did that with some youtube instructions without issue.
Then I decided to check some stats on the car because to my perception, the engine seems to run rather HOT. (I do work on cars and own several scan-tools). so I hooked up my generic scanner since the Creator takes forever to load.
I hooked up the unit and nothing happened, I tried to place the key in position 1, no go. So I just switched the car off and left thinking my scanner is acting up. A few hours later, I come to start the car and the car does start but there are no lights whatsoever in the instrument cluster - dash (both of them), they were completely dead.
After 20 minutes of PANIC, I decided to check any fuse related to the instrument cluster.
I finally found fuse 29 5A in box by passenger's right foot (OBD fuse) blown. Swapped it and all was good. I could breathe again.
Apparently in these cars (unlike BMW, which I have plenty of experience with) a generic scanner will blow this fuse and cause the entire instrument cluster to switch off.
If this happens, don't panic, just change-out fuse 29. You can use the spare from 39, if not in use.

Hope someone benefits from this, there is no mention at all on the internet about this issue.
Thanks,

Scanner was a VS890 generic scanner I bought off ebay a few years ago to plug into japanese cars.
Has worked great everywhere else, including VAG cars and my e46, e39, e34 and e36 BMW's.
I've heard great things about Actron, and am still considering it. I'm on ECS's website pretty much every day.. lol.
I do have the Creator C110 which is specific for BMW/Mini and works great, but it is so slow, it's painful to connect. I'm looking into acquiring INPA or similar and be done for good.

On mine, I just took off the Tach and disassembled it. Unplugged the board inside and plugged it back in and it worked. Maybe the connectors were corroded enough to lower system current. Hope that helps everybody.
