R56 ticking sound
ticking sound
my 2007 MCS, which I have had for about a month has a very slight ticking sound coming from what I believe is the passenger side. It sounds like a stone in the wheel but I have heard it even when stopped at a light. I have only heard it when in the car and will have to do some further investigation but wondered if anyone else has heard anything like this and had any idea what could be causing this.
You need to open the bonnet and listen.
If it is a noise like rocks bouncing around or a diesel sound you
may have the timing chain issue (not to scare you) but it's not
all that uncommon.
How many miles on the car? Have you had a Mini dealership pull
up the work record on the car to see what all it's had done to it?
Also, is the ticking you describe intermittent or constant?
Keep in mind with the direct injection the engine will have a ticking noise
due to the injectors and also the lifters do a little ticking as well.

It actually sounds like a very faint clock ticking. I have only heard it while in the car driving. It seems to start after a few minutes of driving then goes away after a while. It doesn't sound like rocks or anything even like that. Just a very faint clock ticking.
I'd venture to guess it's just your lifter or injectors which is a normal ticking sound until the oil gets up in the valves and circulates.
r56 s ticking
sorry to post on this old thread but i just noticed this on my 2010 MCS. I was sitting in the drive through and noticed that when i let it idle, it was fine, but if i lightly revd it, over 1000, i heard a little ticking. almost like a lifter or injector. i could hear it till the engine got too loud to focus on it.
the things is, after that i can let it back down to idle and it's fine. lightly rev and there it is.
honest opinion, do you think it's worth taking in? i have never noticed it before... would you take it in?

I have noticed a ticking and got out my long screwdriver and located it. It was the injectors.
FYI: to use a long screwdriver like a stethoscope place the tip on the suspect area and put your ear against thee handle. This will isolate specific areas for noise.

Absolutely. A noisy R56 engine is not something to be messed with. Step one: check your oil level.
