Car making horrible screeching sound!!

soooo, my brand new 2015 cooper s with less than 600 miles is making a horrible screeching sound. maybe belts? sounds like it is coming from the intake area, noticed it when i came into the parking deck this morning, then got worse when i went to lunch. dealer should be calling me back soon.

sounds goes up with engine rpms, does not have to be in gear, anyone else have an issue like this?

I hate when that happens, you go into a shop and the noise is no longer there. Glad you took a video! Let us know what the dealer says. Maybe post up the video too for anyone who may run across the same issue.

Oh wow! That's honestly not what I would have guessed. Sorry to hear this. Any word on what they think the cause was?

they didnt tell me, just that after calling bmw in germany, they decided to replace it. i would guess this is a flywheel issue like some others have reported...

I know there is also a similar issue (not as bad and has a better solution) here with it popping out of gear. Maybe someone can reach out and see if mods can make a sticky for people with that and your issue. Sorry about this and hope you get it back and don't deal with anymore issues like this one.

This is such a drag. But at least they are doing the right thing...and quickly too. I had a new gearbox at 3k for the 1st gear issue. It took weeks for them to figure it out.

No mine was great up until I sold the car 3 months ago. The only thing was that besides feeling like a new gearbox the clutch never felt exactly the same. I only noticed that for the first 100 miles though.

got my car back today, so far so good. shifts are fine, clutch pedal seems to take a milisecond to return after release, i cannot remember if it did that before. it may need some time to wear in.

also, i know this may be crazy, or just me, but rev matching seems different and not a smooth. maybe after having autos for the last 2 weeks i dont remember what it was originally like. is it possible that the new tranny does not have RM or possibly it is turned off?

anyway, i plan on driving her hard, ill keep everyone informed if i have any more issues.

i will say, the auto vs manual are really 2 different cars, sooo glad to be back in mine!

car was fine on the way home from work, but first start up this morning the noise returned. took another video and sent to dealer. i have told my sales guy i do not want an engine replacement and i do not want this car. 4 weeks and i have only gotten to drive it for about 8 days. i haven't even made a payment on it yet. i also found the dealer inspection report and this car was delivered back in oct 2014. this makes it one of the older 2015 models and it sat on their lot for almost a year.

this will be interesting to see what the dealer will do for me

anyone have any suggestions?

Get lawyer that specializes in consumer protection and the "lemon law" for your state. This needs to be done and documented on the paperwork from the dealer PROPERLY.

The lawyer should be free if you have a good case. MINI pays the lawyer fees.

Lehto's Law has some good podcasts on the subject.

The dealer is the middle man in lemon law cases. You sue the manufacturer.

i hope it doesn't get to the point where i need a lawyer. right now the dealer has been very responsive. they are going to come get the car tomorrow and we will talk on Monday to work out a resolution. I am torn between allowing them to put in a new motor, give me my money back or order a 2016 model. I think the dealer will do the right thing especially since i have only had the car 4 weeks...

I think if it turns out you have another major problem with the car they should accommadate you and take the car back and let you start over again.

Well I was sort of in the same situation. Of course my car had 0 miles but they could not get the right part to make it start. After 6 weeks of a loaner they ordered me a new one.
As I stated before they should have a 30day or so money back guarantee IMHO. This is a clear case for this. At this point this should be your choice.

spoke with dealer today, i let me know that some 2014 builds have received a recall on the bearings... got a pretty quick response that they are working on a goodwill exchange of my car for another one. so looks like i will be getting a new car. it will be interesting to see how this "swap" goes as i want a pretty specific car...
