R56 Window Weirdness
Window Weirdness
Okay, I've racked up a mere 700 miles on my new MINI Cooper hardtop and had a strange thing happen with my windows, hoping someone can offer some advice. I will try to keep this short.
I assume everyone knows that this MINI windows lower themselves a tiny bit when the door is opened and close themselves once the door is closed.
This morning I noticed my windows were opened a crack. So when I got in, I went to close the driver's side, but as soon as it closed fully it automatically started to lower - I stopped it midway, but it would then rise to the top, and then automatically lower itself again.
So once I allowed it to go all the way down, it stayed down.
Now the windows appear to be working fine, except the add'l weirdness is that now they will lower themselves with a single touch, whereas before we had to press and hold the button for them to go all the way down.
I am not going to worry about this too much just yet since the spec sheet said the car came with "one-touch" windows and now they are indeed working that way even when they weren't before. But still...
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to program the windows with the OBC?

Hi # 6,,,Our '12 mcs did that to me once only so I dismissed it as a (mini) fluke. The one touch window may be oem, since ours does the same,up or down. Have you called the dealer ? I'm guessing the snow has finally melted up there ? We spent 28 yrs. in Cornish Flat N.H. before retiring to E. Tn. (near the Snake & the Dragon).

Right now I am chaulking it up to a MINI fluke as well. We have contacted the dealer, they said they'll get back to us.
I don't really expect a solution. These things have to be not working usually in order to fix them, but we'll see.
(and yes, it has stopped snowing! :-) Actually, after a very rainy Spring, our Summer has been quite nice!)
In order for the one-touch up/down feature to work, the window stop positions must be learned, which is done by driving all the way down and all the way up. I read numerous times that those settings are frequently lost and need to be re-initialized, so it is probable MINI simply automated the procedure on the newer models (i.e. whenever the settings are lost, the windows will fully go down and then up to reinitialize).
Again, this is a guess but from the descriptions, that must be the reason

For all ouf you:
This window thing is a VERY COMMON problem with 2nd Gen MINI's. Now for 2012 they may have added an extra learning feature but here is the standard way of learning the limits.
1. Hold window switch up and continue to hold for at least 10 seconds after window has stopped.
2. Hold window switch down and continue to hold for at least 10 seconds after window has stopped.
If the window does not respond properly try the procedure again. If it agian does not repond properly then the car needs to go to the dealer to be reprogaramed as there is a corrupt limit profile that is not being overwritten.
And yes jsut about everything in these cars is computer controled.

That makes a lot of sense, good to know about this fix.
You learn so much on this forum. I don't even want to tell you the things I did not know about my Mini before I read them here, and then thought "does it really do that?" and went and tried it!

My windows go flaky sometimes. For me it's using 1-touch up and the window will close then open all the way again or open 1/2 way.
Like others have said, this is all computer controlled. The last time I had weird window business I had to take the car in to have it re-flashed. There were problems with the flash so I had a 1-series loaner for 2 days.

One more thing to keep in mind... a few weeks ago when I had my stereo installed, we had to take the quarter trim panels off...
In order to do that, we removed the rubber weatherstripping around the passenger door (on the body)
The point of that? When I put it all back together, I hit the auto up and my window went up like 80% and by itself, opened up.
I thought that was strange so I tried it again... and again, and again.
These windows are extremely sensitive to blockage. If the window motor feels any resistance when trying to close, it will automatically open again.
In my particular case, I had a small part of the rubber weatherstripping not pushed in all the way and the window motor recognized that and opened itself automatically.
Just a suggestion if the learning thing doesn’t work, might wanna check to make sure the something isn’t in the way.
The easiest way to test that is to open the door and hit the auto up. If the window goes up, then you know for sure it’s in the rubber or a glass adjustment.
Just sayin’

It wasn't that issue in my case, but it is something to remember.
