I can’t believe I pushed it THAT far....

Now, I’m not normally one of those people that drive until they literally run out of gas but for some reason, I drive the mini so much, it seems I’m always getting lowwww on gas. I mean real low.

This is like the second or third time this has happened to me. I don’t like to let my tanks run too low because if you’ve ever looked in a gas tank, there’s a lot of crap in there. (not as much now with newer tanks but when I was younger...definitely)

I stopped last week and this is how much it took. I couldn’t believe it.

I think I must have sucked up every drop possible.... geesh.

Call me cynical but if I saw that number come up I might think the pump wasn't accurate.

Supposedly 14.5 is the maximum amount of fuel one can pump into a MINI but that might differ by generation (?):

I thought the same thing but I figured if it were really low and you filled up the neck, it might push those kind of numbers. I haven’t done any research to verify any of this, all I had to go on was the pump.

or you can be me and run out when the range says 55 miles...LOL

I just put that stuff Seafoam in my tank and I didn't notice any difference in my gas mileage. In fact... I only got 23.5 miles to this tank.

I just filled up after draining the tank so I will see on this tank what my mileage is.

I was reading my '05 Manual the other day and I think, at least the R53's, have a fuel capacity of 13.2g or something WITH a reserve tank at 2.4g or something so that would be a little over 15+ gallons? Of course I'm being lazy and just recounting off the top of my head and could be totally wrong but could explain why we are sometimes almost filling up to 15 gallons

*Edit*

Ok HAD to go look it up myself but yup, 13.2 tank for my '05 MCS, and 2.1 reserve, a little over 15gallons!!! http://libraryofmotoring.info/pdf/ma...manual2005.pdf

Have you had a tune up? 23.5 SUCKS!

If I drive mine nicely (hwy) I can get 30-32 consistently... driving the way I do, I’ll usually get 28mpg on the highway.

Driving around town and with my heavy *** foot, I’ll still average 23-25 mpg. How can your non S only get 23??

You may need a tune up.

the plugs and wires were just changed within the past year. Dan at Grassroots did it for me.
I know my gas mileage has sucked lately!!

I don't know much about cars but if the transmission fluid needs to be changed would that affect my mileage?

No, changing your tranny fluid doesn’t effect your gas mileage.

Sorry... I’d check air filter, fuel filter and your lead foot.

I refill close to empty most of the time and I rarely spend less than CAD$60 these days with fuel selling for $1.30/L regular ($1.40+/L premium) in Toronto

I remember not so long ago when fuel was selling for less than HALF of that!

Fuel tank capacity

If the range displayed is less than 30 miles/50 km, be sure to refuel; otherwise, engine functions are not guaranteed and damage could occur.

Approx. 13.2 US gallons/50 liters, including the reserve capacity of 2.1 US gallons/8 liters.

I think that's a record, not a game I want to play.

The capacity isn't 13.2 gallons AND a reserve of 2.1 gallons. It's 13.2 gallons total, the last 2.1 of which is your "reserve" (that's typically when the "low fuel" light comes on.)

The true capacity is a smidgen more than 13.2 gallons, and then there's the filler neck volume, but the total isn't 15+ gallons.

Looking back at the last 2-1/2 years' worth of gas receipts, the most I've ever gotten into my 2006 was 14.19 gallons, and the tank was just about empty. I don't know if the 2007 model used a different tank, though.

Hrmm, curious then. . .I wonder if "some" stations are cooking the books? Lower volume output, higher digital readings, how is the consumer to know? Neck fill may account for a quart or two, but certainly NOTHING in the gal range. . .

Thats nothing, Im used to that. lol Here in NY you gotta find the deals and avoid the cheap gas. I always use BP or Sunoco 93 octane or more if they have it.

Some stations may have inaccurate pumps, either by design or by accident, but in 2.5 years, I've had 23 fill-ups from stations all over the country that were over 13.2 gallons, and I usually had at least 20 miles or so left to go on the digital readout, so it wasn't as if the tank was bone-dry. That leads me to believe that there's at least a little true capacity above the 13.2 that MINI is advertising.

Apparently there is a lawsuit pending in Canada about poorly calibrated pumps... No surprise there.

Fuel tank Volume

Fuel tank volume is the amount of fuel that the manufacturer dictates PLUS the amount of AIR volume required by the release engineer. At GM we had to design the volume based on expansion of gas when it was hot out and if there happened to be an extreme angle to the ground at the pump. It is not unusual to put an extra couple of gallons in if your like me and stand there and nurse it in.
