So the rebuild begins... (Way Motor Works)

I’ll start this thread with Way from Way Motor Work’s R56 he’s building for the track.

The car came to my shop bought as a rebuildable total.... I’ll start with some pics and update as it gets put back together.

Qtr panel in bodywork...

Qtr panel in primer...

Took old roof off, replaced with new roof and bracing for mini without sunroof.

rear hatch jamb painted/cut in...

This week the car goes into the paint shop. Front end is done, all necc. parts are cut in, radiator support has been replaced, suspension straight, we’ll send it into paint and hopefully have paint on it this week.

Quick pics of it painted....

impressive work so far, looks like she'll turn around nicely.

unrealated question for you, are you running spacers with the GP wheels?

i've always wondered if they would fit over JCW calipers.

Not sure about how a car is rebuilt...
so what are the "sticks" sticking out of the back fender? I see you took them off but what are they for?

I tried to insert the image that I am talking about but it didn't work.

The “sticks” are metal “studs” that are welded onto the panel and a slide hammer attaches to them. You then use the slide hammer to “pull” the studs out which pulls the metal out.

Point is, it’s a way of pulling the metal out without drilling a hole in metal and then pulling the metal into shape.

Make sense?

The pictures don't do it justice compared to what we started with. I saw it last week and it looks fantastic and Mark was able to save the original panels rather than replacing them.

Yes those are actual GP wheels, not the clones. They will be for sale once I get something to replace them with.
They do clear JCW brakes with a 1/2inch spacer.

I never knew the technique of welding studs on a panel to pull it out. For those that are interested, here is a good video demonstrating the procedure. http://v8tvshow.com/content/view/1009/1/

It amazes me what you body guys can do to straighten out a tweaked body shell. Great work, and thanks for the pics!

with respect to this portion of the unibody, how much of the original strength remains after the damage and straightening processes?

cheers,

Charlie

If you don't start heating stuff up (with high strength steel, you can't (or rather, NOT suppose to)) then it's not an issue. If the parts still leave the crush zones in tact, then there shouldn't be a problem.

After doing this for almost 30 years, I had better trust what I say or otherwise I'm screwed since I fixed my own car after trashing it at the track..lol. (rebuild on my mini)

definitely liked your rebuild also. I do body work on the side but nothing that amazing. I've painted 3 whole cars, and spot painted / repair a dozen vehicles. very impressed, i need to come work at your shop for a few weeks for free.
