Questions on Trunk release

ok, new to mini, and I have look thru the manual and I can only found one samll section of "Tailgate" on page 24 as how to open a non converible trunk...either from key remote or by pressing the button in the handle. Is this true? no other manual release inside the car? and can it open with car started and in park/drive?

Thanks,
Ray

Supposedly (I've never actually looked for it myself, so I can't say for sure) there is a manual release. Under your back seat cushion in the middle there is a ring attached to a cable that you pull. But I can neither confirm nor deny.

There is no other button, in the car, that you would use under normal conditions (there is the cable pull that minicooperwill talked about). The hatch works just like any other door. When locked, it can't be opened, but if you unlock the doors it can be opened with car running or not.

You can eject the fob with the MINI off, and restart with the fob out. That would enable you to push the hboot open button on the fob from inside the car.
I have no idea why this would be needed.

By the same token, I don't understand why women wear shorts and a sweater at the same time or why they put little umbrellas in rum drinks.

One thing I dont like about the mini is it donest have a trunk release button.

I always have to use the remote. Even with the key in the car, I can't seem to open the trunk from behind. Arghhh

Ok, I think I figured out...if use key fob to open the 1 door, the trunk will not open. If both doors unlocked, than it can release when engine is On.

I guess you can use the door unlock switch to unlock the drunk.

One thing I got to say, there are some 'un-common' or should I say 'not quite integrated' design with the Mini.

The Volume control is one them, it looks like an after thought thing that they forgot about it and just located in some empty space...then I realized that is when your hand is resting at the stick and you can reach the volume control easier? I think...

There is no longer a cable release for the trunk. That was discontinued some time before the 2009 model year. (There was a lot of discussion about this on this Forum, because earlier models had it...not sure when the change was made.)

Yep, I was going to say this and mine (03/2008 build) does not have the cable.

My dec 2006 build lacks a cable release as well. This and no temperature gauge dont make sense.

Are you sure your Dec. 2006 doesn't? It was for emergency use and was underneath the rear seat...

It makes sense for the R53 to have the manual trunk release - that way, if the battery is dead you can open the hatch and replace it. The R56 doesn't need it, since the battery is up front.

I also don't entirely understand the confusion about a switch to open it. Think of it as a handle, not a switch. It's not a trunk that you need to "pop" but instead it acts like another door. What would an inside button do, unlatch it and leave it sitting there? You still need to lift it to open it, so lift it with the handle and unlatch it at the same time.

ALL doors must be unlocked to pop the rear hatch. There is a trunk release, just squeeze.

FYI, If you have the FOB in the dash and need to "unlock" the boot/hatch hit the unlock button in the middle of the lower toggle switches then the boot will be able to be opened from the outside button.

This only applies if you set your driver door to unlock in the computer. And/or you have auto-lock set in the computer. Personally I have those two options off because the boot is almost always locked in that case. I highly recommend setting all three doors to unlocked on fob and turn off auto-lock if you access the boot a lot.

I believe that is for the emergency release in case someone being locked inside...I guess too many of you locking your wife or girl friends in it..., it became a law few years back that all the cars installed one.

I just broke my emergency boot release. It's a simple enough part that I hope the dealer has one. It's not the whole cable, just a little plastic doodad at the end. I'm wondering how bad BMW will stick me for this one if it even exists.

My son was rolled over going 65 MPH in a 2015 S and slid about 200 feet on the roof

It had a sunroof that did not break, but both doors would not open, He was fortunate that one window would still operate and he was able to crawl out. Fortunately, on the passenger side that was about 2 feet from a concrete barrier. If the window had not operated, the hatch was undamaged because the slide was on the roof and hood. Owners NEED to know where the emergency release is, if if they have discontinued it it seem like Mini is in violation of the law that prevent people from being lock in a trunk.

My '07 MCS R-56 N14 DOES have the trunk release cable when I changed out the fuel filter. That's how I know that I definitely have one

I know the 2007 has one, but I thought they either discontinued it a year or so later. If anyone can tell me if it’s present on 2014 to 2022 models, and where it is, I’d really like to know after seeing what could have easily happened in my son’s roll over. Especially after seeing smoke come out of the fuel filler door.

@JohnRausch
Every car that I know hasta have one because it is the law when victims get kidnapped and get thrown into the trunk, they’re able to get out safely. I don’t know why minis are discontinuing the secondary release latch. That’s beyond the scope of my comprehension.
