Has Mini sorted out all the sunroof problems?

I am in the process of building a car to order. Has Mini finally sorted out all the sunroof problems? Is wind noise, squeaking rubber, plastic noises, water leaks, and not opening in heat still a problem in newer cars? Have most of these problems been resolved in 2009 and 2010 models?

Yes and no. I had my sunroof on my '08 Clubman looked at again last week (for the third time). The dealer told me no parts have been changed since my car was made, so the parts are all the same. They have made installation changes that should solve every problem you list. The problem is the variability in installation is still there.

almost 11K on my 09 and zero moonroof issues, other than wind noise at 60+ mph.

I have a 09 MC with a sunroof and so far the only thing that you have listed is the wind noise. But it's not really bad or loud.

6500 on my 09 Justa w/no sunroof issues -- and it clears the roof rack with plenty of room to spare. Lotsa sun still filters through though, even with the sunshade.

I wonder if there is an adjustment trade-off between wind noise/not opening. My sunroof is quieter than the fixed roof loaner I had.

Of the problems you list - wind noise, squeaking rubber, plastic noises, water leaks, and not opening in heat - only wind noise and not opening seem common.

Been having a lot of issues with my sunroof in my 09 MC. It hit 10 degrees C here a couple days ago and my roof wouldn't open.... hate to see what's going to happen when it's 25+...
Had it in for this problem last year and they said the lubricated the rails etc, and it seemed to help temporarily but obviously if it's sticking in barely warm weather then it's not solved.

Have an '09 Clubman. Temperatures here ranged from 91 to 40 with tons of rain and snow. I've had my car a little over a year and never had a problem the sunroof.

When I open the sunroof I do notice an increase in the noise and sometimes have to turn the stereo up louder. It reminds me of when I would open up the driver and/or passenger side windows. I'm not sure that it is a design or production flaw over the current state of physics.

I have had my JCW since 11/08. The only sunroof issue that I have had is the not opening in heat problem. I have not had it back to the dealer to fix this issue.

I have a fix for this though. I push up on the sunroof while holding the toggle switch in the open position and then the sunroof will open.

I have noticed the same issue. I have also noticed smaller pieces of paper will often flutter about at highway speeds.

My sunroof fails to open in the wintery cold weather here in the UK. It's a 57 plate with 10k on the clock.

I tried a little WD40 and that seems to have cured it. Although I did manage to get the stuff everywhere Hope the paintwork isn't damaged!

your paintwork's fine, WD40 is just a light oil.

Mine's a 8/07 build with 100k and has never had any of the sunroof problems discussed here on NAM.

Their sun roof's there's going to be some problems with them. Wind noise is a given no matter how well it is made. The question is why in the world are you opening them when its cold out?

Wind noise is not a given when the sunroof is closed. Mine really is quieter (closed)than the fixed roof loaner Clubman I had. As I said before, I wonder if there is some sort of tradeoff between noise and hot operation.

I open mine for ventilation when it is cool, same as you might do with the side windows. All that glass tends to heat up the interior on sunny days, even when it is cool out. Mine works fine now. The real test will be what happens when it gets hot out.

I wish I didn't have a sunroof. I had the whole thing PUMA'd 5 weeks ago and everything was replaced. It stopped rattling for a 4 weeks and then last week it started again.

I don't think there is. My sunroof sticks when hot & I get to turn my stereo up when traveling at highway speeds to drown out the wind noise.

Thanks dude - it's done the trick though - the sunroof opens and closes perfectly again now

No problems with mine here -- and I use it every time the weather permits!!
09 / 6,000 miles

I don't have any issues with 'wind noise' either, no matter what speed I'm going. Maybe it's because I have my music up LOUD so I don't notice... :P

I've had mine's since August 2006 and never had a problem with my sunroof. I've never experience the "stick" problem. My sunroof always opens no matter the weather. I JUST LOVE MY MINI and MY SUNROOF. I motor with my sunroof open ALL THE TIME!!!

Careful - Mini is likely to have one of those "openometer" things attached to the sunroof models if they find out.
