Not one I could find in the '08 Manual. Take a pic. of it and post it here, someone will be able to tell you what it is exactly.

Maybe it just came on, at 8pm (his time) on a Saturday night. Thus, dealer is closed.

Yes there is, however it is not what the OP describes. The Washer Fluid Resevior Sensor shows like a windshield with a spary coming from the middle bottom and then splitting into to two sprays. Can you picture it now??

I'm thinking that a Low Coolant Level is what the OP is describing, but I was unable to find anything in my manual.

Why would there be a senor in the washer fluid tank? Illegal immigrant from Great Britain, of spanish ancestry?

That reminds me I just noticed a symbol I don't recognize. It isn't illuminated, just looking at the tac and saw it there. It's a counter-clock-wise circle with arrow around a triangle with an exclamation point (if I remember correctly). If it came on I would pull out the manual, I just remember seeing it and thinking what the heck does that mean....maybe if I turn to hard to the left it comes on?
my guess is that it's part of the traction control, but who knows maybe it detects when the earth's rotation is off.

I agree with mini-gav. Brake fluid is low.

According to the owners manual there are two different indicators for the brake fluid. The first (pictured below) is the "miles until service" indicator which the OP was mentioning they saw which comes on at startup.

The second is the "fluid too low" indicator pictured below.

You sure it's coolant, Chad? The symbol of a circle surrounded by parentheses (O) is well known for brakes (although symbolically, more appropriate for drum brakes than discs). Add a wavy line in the circle and you go from brakes to brake fluid.

I had the same symbol appear on my Mini S just a few weeks ago. Stopped at my nearby Mini dealer; the service writer looked at it and said "brake fluid".

You are correct Bob it was the brake fluid and not the coolant. I've edited my post accordingly.

Are you saying that you're having problems with your brakes besides this indicator light? If you have the circle with liquid in the middle it's not a failure it's just a notice that scheduled maintenance is due. If you have the circle with the exclamation point that indicates a failure.

I found this thread because I was getting the indicator at startup to service this month and went in and found that it was the brake fluid service indicator. I wasn't aware that there was a scheduled maintenance to flush and replace brake fluid. It's every 2 years or 30,000 miles evidently.
