Keyfob Chrome ring

Hi,

Anyone else have the plastic chrome ring on their keyfobs break? Both of mine are now broken. It's just a cosmetic thing, really, as I don't think it effects the starter function. But, if anyone knows if there's a replacement part for it, prefereably in real metal, that'd be great. Thanks.

I think the MINI Dealer can address that for you. When mine broke, I noticed the split prior to total failure and I superglued it.....it's been fine ever since. I've heard of other folks taking it to the dealer and they can get a replacement ring for it.

Cool. I'm due for my 30k mile service in a week or 2, so I'll if they replace it.

They'll replace it. Mine broke, too, and was replaced when I came in for my one year service.

One of mine broke as well. I forgot to mention it when I went in for service, but they replaced it anyway.

A drop of superglue on the crack will fix it permanently.

Now the other key has broken, the one the wife uses. Looks like I'll have to get back to the dealer agin.

These are both keys for Tristan, our 07. I'm wondering if 07s in general have this problem, a couple of others in this thread are also 07s.

Yea, mine was all scratched up and it drove me crazy.

When I took my car in for service last the service cashier saw it and asked if I'd like a new chrome ring for my key fob. Needless to say I was sooo happy!

Well, both my keys look like they've been dragged on the road behind the car. Chrome has flaked off, they look very tacky.

I had my car in for service a month ago - they said nothing about it. Are the new chrome rings any better/more durable than the old ones? If not, I probably won't bother.

i put a strip of clear bra material around both of mine after the chrome started to come off.

Take a cloth measuring tape and measure the chrome area, subtract about 3/8" from the long side and add a touch to the short side. Start at one end and stretch it around the chrome. It took me two tries to get it right, but no more scratches. It does catch in the slot for a bit, but it'll wear down a little and both move freely now.

Actually it does help keep the fob in the slot, mine keep falling out if I'm doing some extreme twisty roads at good speed, i.e. the Dragon! And while the car keeps running just fine it's a real pain.
Was just in for the recall of the secondary water pump replacement and it was not replaced, forgot about it 'til I got home, and they're rather far away!

All you who have had your chrome ring replaced....

Did the dealer replace it with another plastic chrome ring that is prone to break again soon? Or...did they update it and replace it with a real metal part?

Look at the dates on the posts. You will find that the first 13 were from 2009 before the new metal ring came out so the answers you get will not be to your liking as they would have been replaced with the plastic ones.

Will the new metal rings fit the 2009 and earlier fobs?

My wonderful SA has been out sick all week and the guy taking his place said that they wouldn't replace it. They have been paid for $35K+ in warranty repairs, but couldn't replace a $20 chrome ring.

I sure hope Shawn is really sick and didn't quit because it will suck to have to find another dealership to take care care of my little lemon car
