Oil life indicator

I change out the oil in my mini in between the scheduled service.

I have noticed that the mileage until the next oil change is higher when Mini does the change.

After Mini/BMW service 34,000 km until next change.

After my own service (new BMW filter and Sytec 100%) only 23,000 km.

Is there a reset in the on board computer that I missed??

Do you have the equipment to reset the service indicator after you do your own oil/filter changes? If you don't, and just change the oil the counter just keeps going like nothing happened. What I noticed is that the first countdown (23k miles) was a lot more miles than the second one will be (about 8k miles).

There is a sequence of button pushes on the dash to reset service indicator.

You really should not reset it while you are under the free service plan. You'll get a freebie every year or when the service indicator says its do, whichever comes first. I let them reset it when they change it, do an oil change about half way through the year 4-5000 miles, then go for my yearly and let them reset it again.

By the way, how do you reset it??

agree about the no-reset.

I'm doing changes between "free" services as well... the free interval is way too long if you keep the car for more than 4 or 5 years. cheap insurance IMO

How to Reset Oil service indicator:

1)Push-hold Trip Button (TB)
2)Turn key to position 1
3)Continue to hold (TB), the number 15A will show to the teft of the milage
4)Release (TB) for 3 sec and then hold (TB) again
5)In about 5-8 sec RST will show in the left corner
6)Release and then press again "15000" will show, press and release
7)Car is now reset to the 15,000 service

I have a question about the freebies: I got one at 1 year (about 14k), then another when the indicator went to zero (about 20k). Now I'm at 23k and am almost at the end of year 2. Do I get another free one?

Yes you get a free oil service once a year even if your oil indicator says you have more miles left.

There's no key to turn to position 1 on the 2nd Gen. Here's the how-to courtesy of our friends over on MINI2.com.

Thanks for the help all.

I will leave it as is. BMW can rest it when I take it in for the next oil change.
