OEM roof rack - 2008 - install question
Is what I read in a previous thread true? I read in a thread about installation that the stickers on the OEM roof rack are not accurate. They show a picture of an arrow on the passenger side, front and back. The side of the rail the sticker is on, according to directions, is supposed to be the passenger side. Someone said in a previous thread that this was inaccurate and that you should reverse them.
From your experience, if you've installed one, did you go by the directions or are they truly incorrect?

Here is a comment from another blog
I bought a 2007 Cooper S and the base support rack from the dealer. What a pain to install! It took 4 hours and a trip to the dealer (the service was too busy but the sales manager was very helpful). Learn from me and it will take you less than an hour! It’s really a two person job. Don’t bother cutting away the rain gunnel. The trick is to find the correct slot to stick the bracket into the roof. Use the plastic card as vertical as you can and then pry the gunnel toward yourself to reveal the steel slot. The plastic card will want to go into the slot but what you want to do is push it down past the slot and then pry the rubber gunnel back to reveal the proper slot. There are other slots so don’t be fooled, you must find the one that has a steel frame around it. Don’t use the book as a guide to find them. Measure from the front of the car door window 9 1/4″ (23.5cm) and 36 1/4″ (92cm) and you’ll find the beginning of the slot. The slot is just wide enough to fit the bracket into. The other trick is to loosen the nut until the brackets brake loose and opens out AND then push them back down and tighten the nut just enough so it holds them in the groove of the brass nut. If you don’t do this the brackets will be too wide for the slot and it won’t go in all the way. Do this step before you try to put it on the roof. As you tighten the nut down the brackets expand and keep it snug in the slot–its all based on tension to keep it in place. Therefore, its much easier if you use two people. Put one side in the slot and then for the other side pull the bar toward you and there should be just enough give to get it in the slot. Make sure you are careful as you can scratch the paint on the roof. Do not begin to tighten the nuts until both are in the slots all the way. Only then should you tighten the nuts. Tighten one side only a few turns of the wrench and alternate between the left and right side of the rack until both are tightened. You’ll know if you have the brackets in the slot correctly because the rubber pieces touch the roof and the rack doesn’t wiggle when you push on it. My front rack was much more difficult to get in the slot correctly so you might want to start with the back one first.

Correct installation?
Hi everyone. I'm installing my base roof racks today. Not sure if they are installed correctly as they seem to sit a bit high off the roof (see photos). They seem very tight a don't wiggle at all. The rubber protector is not sitting on my roof. Any thoughts?

Just went thru this last weekend. I purchased a used rack with all the tools and i used an old credit card which helped me find the right slots. Take note of the roof strip look closely and you will see a 2 lines in the strip of rubber. Use the credit card between the lines and pull the drip rail down a bit (It is not metal but a strip of rubber & plastic) and slip the credit card into the slot between the rubber & roof. You have the correct slot if the card just fits. I found it easier to just fit a large washer under the brass not and turn the nut one or two turns so the clamp will just slide into the slot. It also helps to loosen the bolts of the top bar from the clamps (2 bolts each end) After i had both sides in place i backed off the brass nut removed the washer and lined up the two clamp ends in the grove of the brass nut and then used the torque wrench as shown in the instructions. Once you know the drill it is not hard to put on. As far as which bar goes where my bars has no markings at all. One bar was just a bit longer then the other and that i placed in the front of the car. Don't forget to tighten up the bolts on the top bar.
Mini base rack install
Thanks y'all! I did't find it too hard to install them. It did take me about an hour and a half because i was being extra super careful. There is an excellent youtube video on how to install them and that was extremely helpful (MINI Sessions - How To Install a Roof Rack On A MINI Cooper.) Also, the measurements to the cut outs in flyinace2000's post above helped me find them right away! I will now install my Thule Glide and Set kayak holder. I did have to order an adapter kit for it which was really just 8 longer screws (thule xadaper3). The techs at Thule told me this will work for my mini racks. Will post a photo of that setup soon. Thanks for the responses!
