You should have seen what they were like in the 1950's and 60's.

This one was engineered by Germans and French. They are just built in England.

Or the jaguars of the eighties, they would routinely have electrical fires, that would set the whole car a blaze.

Yeah, it could be way worse, but do keep an eye on how long it's in the shop. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you in hopes that you get your baby back soon.

I figured no lucas electronics in the Mini since BMW designed it...

I thought english cars got much better since the germans too over, my next door neighbor has a Bentley and it's bulletproof. I guess BMW vs VW design.

I'm starting to undestand why my neighbor on the otherside both hates and loves his quattroporte, hates it when it doesn't run, which is often, but loves it so much when it runs he puts up with the down time.

OK... Back now and all is good.

According to dealer, it was a vac line not hooked up causing the brakes to not work. So they rehooked the line up and changed a seal.

Corey - glad to hear that all is well.

In my MINI world, I'll spare you the gory details, I had it detailed two weeks ago prior to MITM here in CO. The detailer also cleaned the engine with degreaser, water ~ normal procedure. Well, apparantly, the detailer used too much water pressure on the engine which set off the automatic cooling fan. The fan wouldn't automatically shutoff for an hr plus so I drove it to my friend's shop. He tries playing with the relay switches and notices water in the ECU body (this isn't water tight?). He plays around with it, seems to be ok. I pull out of his shop into heavy traffic and she sputters, bucks, spits and dies . MINI USA is called and she's towed to the dealer (Ralph Schomp). It's thursday afternoon about 3. Friday at 3 they call me and tell me that the ECU was water damaged by "an outside influence" and is therefore an unwarrantied item. Additionally, the parts won't be available until the following Tues (there went MITM) . Tuesday comes, the car is ready and $1,587.00 later she's back on the road . All this over a glorified carwash? Needless to say I've cleaned dozens of engines over the years and never had this happen. I checked with a few other owners and electrical issues seem to be the pervasive theme / problem. Sensitive little buggers, these MINI's . Be careful if you decide to detail your engine. Needless to say, we're off to MMMT next week and hopefully it will be a smooth, trouble-free drive to SF and back.

Happy motoring (gurgle, gurgle )

Glad you got your car back Corey. I'm glad they were able to find the problem and get it squared away.

If you guys think MINIS are bad, you should have owned a 90's DSM (DSM= Diamond Star Motors - Mitsu Eclipse, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser).

I owned a 1992 Eagle Talon coupe that was the worst POS I ever owned and that includes two 80's GM products....

It was in the shop EIGHT TIMES in 38,000 miles, and we're talking major stuff here, the timing belt broke while idling at 16,000 miles lunched the entire top end of the engine, then transaxle leaks, engine oil leaks, I threw in the towel when at 38,000 the main crankshaft pulley came loose taking all the V-Belts with it.

They denied my warranty claim on the "60k drivetrain warranty" because they said those parts were "attached to the drivetrain, not part of it"

I promptly traded that POS on an Integra 13+ years ago and never looked back.

BTW - regarding your intake blowing off, same thing happened to my MSM (factory Turbo) Miata, I had to fix it on the side of the road to get home, but didn't have to take it to the dealer.

On the backside of a turbo, there is a lot of pressure, so if the clamps are not tight this can happen.

Sorry to hear about your problems, I'm hoping our MINI is a lot more problem free....

Wow... Not being a gearhead at all, I'm not only floored at all the problems you had with that car, but I'm also floored that you were able to fix a problem with a later vehicle on the side of the road! I'm lucky I know how to change a tire!

A quality detailer will protect the ECU, intake, and electrical components, and use low water pressure to hose down an engine or at the very least, will keep water away from these sensitive area. A production detailer will use his pressure washer and hit the whole engine disregarding all of the above.

Sorry you had a bad experience--but people wonder what the difference is between a $200 detail and a $400+ detail---this is one of those reasons.

Good to hear that you are back in business Corey!
Based on my experiences with new cars, there are usually one or two issues that need to be resolved (Japanese or American), but once these are corrected, things are great for quite a while!

You know, this is probably what happened to my VW. Had it detailed in May (had badly neglected it), including the engine, and sure enough, in June or July, the secondary air pressure switch/relay died, and the cooling fan wouldn't shut off. Had to have it towed to the shop because the battery was so dead it wouldn't hold a charge.

From now on, I'm the only one who details my car (esp. my MINI!)
