My '08 JustaCooper was built today - but '09s are here

I just got confirmation that my 2008 Cooper was born today and is on its way to get shipped. It's a base car, only a "bonnet" stripe and cruise control.

The miniusa site just posted the 2009 cars for configuration tonight. The '09 version is $500 more, but DSC is included, making the '09 the same price as the '08 considering the "free" DSC.

I had no idea the '09 would be available early, at least compared to prior years.

My question is: Should I refuse the '08 I just ordered and get the '09? I'll probably have to wait an additional few weeks (not sure of the delivery date for the new cars), or should I just take the '08 I ordered?

I don't expect that they changed the car very much from year to year, but the '09 may have better resale down the road.

What would you do?

I would take the car you already had built. The only advantage to the 2009 will be the new DTC but you can't get it for another 5 months. The resale value of MINIs is already outstanding, and I just don't see that as a reason to buy or not buy a car.

How long are you keeping it?

If you're the type to sell in a year or two, then refuse it. If you keep a car for several, then the increased resale value from a one-year "newer" car won't be that big of a difference.

Others have said that even though the configurator is updated, the '09s won't start arriving until December anyway...so then you also have to factor in a 5-month loss of motoring, and what THAT'S worth to you!

If you check prices on pre-owned MINI's from 2005 & 2006, you will see that the difference mainly depends on equipment and condition,
not the year.

'06 to '07 would be greater due to major changes.

In the end it's just what really matters to you.

Does having your mini right now really matter to you, so you can motor around all you want?? Or does having the 09, which may have a better resale value matter to you?? Each have different pros and cons. (08= getting mini RIGHT NOW..... 09= waiting 5 months and maybe a better resale value)

But if you decide to just take your 08 you have to think if you will regret taking the mini, when you could of had the more recent year. If you will regret it then get the 09, because a car is not a very good thing to have buyers remorse on. You also have to think the only real difference between the 08 and the 09 is the DSC, and the price.

I was in a similar position. Ordered a basic mini MC and just as it arrived I decided I really wanted an MCS. Went ahead and cancelled the order - dealer sold the car almost immediantely - and will order an 09. As punishment, I get to wait another 5 months.

Yes, the '09 will have better resale for sure. But how are you buying it? If you're leasing, I'm sure the residual/rate will differ making the '08 cheaper. If you're buying and can get the '09 in a few weeks, then without question wait for it.

But sounds like the snag is the '09 isn't available for several months. Meaning... you get your MC in the winter and don't get to enjoy the summer... kinda like letting an entire year go by! In this case, without question get the one you ordered!
