Window shatter from heat?

i've had my mini for 5 days and today in Houston (101 degree weather) my driver's side window shattered. there was glass all on the concrete, even 10 feet away from my car and inside my car. everything was shattered down to the bottom of the window.

well i was just curious if anyone has had this happen to them and how the dealership handled it? my car is in tow right now to the service department and as of right now, they can't guarantee me anything until they investigate my car.

Did the window have any tint applied?

Could it have been a break-in to see if there's a GPS or anything nice in your glove compartment?

Maybe a break-in? We've had 3 consecutive days of 90-100 degree weather and so far no glass shattering problems. are there tons glass on the seat? or does it look like the glass blew out (as oppose to in)?

Sounds like a break in attempt to me. Had that happen years ago to my Nissan 200SX. Insurance covered it.

Hope everything turns out ok and they get it replaced asap!

yeah the break in was my first thought but nothing seems to be disturbed in my car (plus there was nothing to take, i had nothing sitting out and the glove box didn't seem to be opened or disturbed. also it was sitting outside of my house in a neighborhood.) and the shatter pattern of the glass indicated a burst from the inside, rather than someone busting through the glass. majority of the glass was outside, even 10 feet away from the car. some glass was inside of the car but it looked more like an explosion. plus the glass burned my hands when i tried to pick it up. perhaps insurance is the way to go.

Weird!

Like others have said, 101 is a cool summer day here in AZ LOL. It's not uncommon to see temps in an asphalt covered parking lot reach 125+ degrees. Never heard of a window shattering because of it though. I always leave my sunroof vented to help air circulate in and out, helps to minimize the broiler feeling when you get in!

most likely that someone smashed the window and then ran off thinking they saw someone coming or heard something. Sounds like there are no heat window shattering issues. Glad nothing was stolen, and insurance will take care of it.

He keeps stating that the glass was blown away from the car, but you guys keep saying it was a break in. Physics apply here.

If someone hit the glass with a piece of porcelin (thats what the punks breaking in like that use), it would fall straight into the car.

Sounds like the glass had a defect that was brought to light by a hot day. Dealer will cover if you took good pics of the pattern of blown glass.

If the dealer balks, your insurance will probably cover it anyway.

Use this opportunity to replace those door handles with some black ones.

I have personal experience with a BACK glass shattering, as I was standing near it talking to a friend! I had a 1992 Maxima, and was in the parking lot leaving work one evening, when I heard a loud "pop". Didn't think anything of it, climbed into the car, heard some weird sound from the back, and looked in the rear-view mirror to see my back window crumbling to pieces! There were no other cars, around, it was NOT a hot day. When I got it replaced the glass shop said "it happens sometimes. Defects in the glass finally cause the glass to break".

I hope you have success getting the dealer to replace it. I would think that since it's under warranty you'd have a chance, but then again, it's such a freak thing that they may not have much experience with knowing it's possible.

yeah my talks with the dealership have concluded in uncertainty. they will either replace it for $962 or for free if i can prove that it was a defect... and even if it was free it will prob take more than one day resulting in me not having a car. needless to say i am pissed since i have had this car for 5 days. and i've done my research and it seems to be that a defect in the glass is the cause. all the pressure inside the car (i do have black leather and a black top) sitting in the sun... a sudden change in temperature can cause a defect glass to break... so better now than later. i'm not going to bother with the dealership any longer. i found a place that will fix it for $280 in an hour and a half.

Physics or not . . . I rented a 2005 cabrio in Florida once on a golf trip. Left the vehicle on the street overnight only to find the drivers side window broken, about half still hanging in place though completely shattered. Glass inside all over and also in about a 8' circle outside the MINI. Insurance repaired it. Months later I heard some kids had ravaged a few adjacent neighborhoods shooting car windows with a pellet gun.

I was just glad it was a rental and not MY MCS!

glass windows and windshields are either going to break during the first 500 miles on them or they will not break at all.....

if you brought your car back with 2200 miles on it they would laugh at you but it is very common for glass to break during the first week or so.

honestly they shouldn't give you a hassle at all.

It is so interesting HOW dealers can turn the blame on the owners rather then stepping up and taking care of the owners... I would speak to the Owner of the dealership and if the owners do not handle it.. I would take two roads.. One to call my insurance company and pay the deductible. Have the factory rep.. get involved.. The reps have powers that the dealers need to eat the costs... 08 club s
