Are runflat tires noisy?

Had heard somewhere a while back a rumour that the MINI runflat tires are noisy - is that true, was hoping to hear from folks who have this now.

The Dunlap SP Sport 01 DSST that came with my MCS were very noisy, but so are some non-runflats.

I have the Pirelli Eufori@ runflats which are somewhat louder than my original conti non-runflats but the handling is much better IMHO Tire size and road condition are also a factor in tire noise.

Yes, they're noisy.
But, at least they yield a poor ride and handle worse than traditional tires.

I've got the 16" OEM Goodyear Eagle Excellence runflats (Summer Performance) and, contrary to what most folks say, I like them. The road noise is minimal, and traction in all conditions (except snow) is good. Sidewall stiffness is probably similar to a very low profile non-runflat, and is not unpleasant. Had them for 9k miles so far.

Although I likely won't take the car out in the snow, the tires are quite sticky in all other conditions, and the only time the tires seem to lose a bit of grip is when the temps are in the 20's and I'm pushing the car really hard around a tight turn. I was prepared to hate these tires based on all the posts, but they turned out to be a nice surprise. Will I replace them with the same thing? Probably not. But I'm going to wear these things out before I buy new tires, and that's a first for me. I always have replaced OEM tires on previous cars and trucks. Hope this helps!

I've have the 16" OEM Goodyear Eagle Excellence run flats. They lasted 1000 miles before getting replaced by new wheels and tires.
Horrible transfer of road noise on coarse surfaces even at 32 psi.
Excellent handling in the twisty turns.
Poor in the snow.
Excellent in the wet.

New 215/40/18 tires are far quieter than the RF's were.

I have the 16-inch Continental all-season tires and they aren't any more noisy than non-runflats.

When I first got my car last April, I did a Google search on them and came upon a BMW forum where two owners of the previous year's cars were given another stock tire and they were so noisy, the owners took them back and demanded another set. They were both given the Contis and said it was night and day difference.

From the sound of it, so to speak, it just depends on the brand and style you get. Some are better riding and quieter than others.

The Dunlop all season runflats on the '05 and '06 MCS get very noisy around the 20K mark. I replaced the Dunlops on my wife's '05 with the Continental ContiProContact SSR and have been pleased with them so far (quieter and grippier). The Dunlops made enough noise that I thought I had wheel bearings going.

I dont notice any excess noise. I have the stock 17s run flats and at autobahn speeds they are not that loud. They are however really rough when you hit a pot hole or bump! Like obnoxiously rough

Matty, on smooth surfaces they don't make any noise. If you drive on a surface that gets chewed up from tire chains in the winter the noise is almost intolerable.

We ordered our '08 with the all-season runflats, they're the Continental ContiProContacts 195/55/r16. I tend to be a bit of a tire snob, but these have been quite good, great all season grip, quick turn in/feel, and very little road noise. I'll be swapping them onto my 16" Rotas when they arrive & plan to keep them until they're worn out..
Then I'll be switching to a traditional tire, either the BFG G-force sport or Avon tech 500
