brake lights

Hi,
I did a search but really didn't see anything.

I keep getting rear ended in all my cars.
I realize the real solution would be for ppl to put
down their phones and drive. But I don't think
that will happen.

My alternative solution is I want to put super bright
brake light bulbs in all my cars. I don't want to have
electrical problems though. I have seen two types of
replacement bulbs.
a. multi LED
b. super white halogen

Sites I have found thanks to NAM members posting goood sites are
http://www.racinglab.com/
http://www.hid-lights.com/

Can anyone offer up any advice?
I'm mostly asking about the 2007 MC.
But want to change also 2000 Passat and 87 CRX too.

Thanks

Probably best to go with an LED that way there are no heat or voltage issues.

I did a quick search on google for "super bright brake lights" and came up with several good sources. You just need to look at the bulb and match the socket type.

Not an expert though, maybe someone has done this?

+1 for the multi LED.

Also I'd give this a try if you haven't already. Highly recommended here on NAM.

I think amybe the pulsar would be a good solution; it seems more attention-getting.

Also, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but have you looked at the way you might be driving? If you've been rear-ended in all of your cars, you seems to be the common factor. And at least three recent rear-endings seems like a lot...

Good luck!

I appreciate that comment as a valid concern to be addressed
and wouldn't take such a thing as somebody being a jerk.

Two rear enders have I been sitting in traffic for over
2 minutes stationary without moving, with my foot
on the brake not rolling along and cell phone talking
maniacs have come up from behind at high speed and
WHAM.

Sitting in traffic. There is no way to get out of the way.
I am not stopping short, or stopping quickly. I am just sitting
minding my own business.

The other one was ex-neighbor pedro with no license got drunk,
parked his car on a hill with no brake on and it rolled down hill
and smashed out VW. But it was a rear end smash out so I
include it.

The MINIs breaks are better then most. Just because you can stop in time does not mean the idiot in the SUV who hasn't changed their breaks in 150,000 miles can. I see people all the time who follow too close to the car in front of them not because they can't stop but because the person behind them is doing the same and so-on and so-on and then you have a pile-up. I always leave enough room in front of me so if I hit the breaks, look in my mirror, and see the person behind me not stopping then I can let off the break and give them more time. Also, I never watch only the person ahead of me. I watch the person ahead of them. If 2, 3, 4, cars ahead start breaking you will eventually need to do the same. Don't start slowing down when the car ahead of you does. Slow down before the car ahead of you does. This way, if the car ahead of you misses the fact that people are slowing you don't end up doing the same and having to stop short.

You can't control the traffic behind you but you can control the traffic ahead of you. What I mean by this is that you should always try to give yourself enough room in front to get out of the way of the driver who is not paying attention behind you.

The pulser is a neat tool though. Also check all your break lights on a regular basis and make sure they are in good working order.

I find that the brake pulsing light is most effective in warning them that you are brakeing. They tend to stay at least a cars length away from me. . Its also cheap

That's the funny thing about it that makes me so angry.

I drive defensively like on a motorcycle where you utilize
the 12 second rule not the 2 or 3 second rule that is
way out of date in my opinion.

I've taken like this NTSB driving safety course through my work.
I could go on and on.

In my opinion it really comes down to the two things I hate the
most: endless useless cell phone talkers and monster truck drivers.

So I've decided to take some corrective action - make myself more
noticable with brighter brake lights. I'm going to get that blinking
thing too. I book marked it.

I've actually been rear ended two other times, just sitting there,
for at least a minute. But those were 10 years ago and 15 years ago
so I didn't include them.

Some ppl go their entire lives without getting smashed.
It's maddening.

There was a thread about putting LED replacements in the brake lights sometime ago. IIRC, there was a problem doing so because the OBC thinks the bulb has burned out. I don't recall the issue clearly, but you should research it before purchasing the LEDs.

I'd recommend the six flash pulsar from GoMiniGo.com. I have one in my MCS. http://gominigo.com/23445.html

However, it wont help when you are sitting. In that case, I don't think there is much of anything you can do. I doubt that brighter brake lights are going to be noticed by a driver that doesn't even see a car. The MINI brake lights are fairly bright to begin with.

Yeah, there's not much you can do about that! Maybe you need a lucky rabbits foot hanging from the rearview...
