Uh Oh... Engine Warning Light

I was running my MCS pretty hard last night and the engine warning light/icon came up... looks like the outline of an engine block and has the right side of it (at an angle) filled in YELLOW. According to the manual it's okay to keep driving the car but says to see the dealership. The manual says the 'red' version of this warning is a lot worse.

What's the scoop on this? What might it mean?

it means you own a car and warning system which is unreliable...welcome to the club

bet you your dealer won't find anything wrong and will say come back if it does it again...let me know if i am wrong

ps, buy an Alta ecu upgrade if you want more problems

When my car hit 900 miles the yellow engine light became an issue. It would come on for days and then go out for days, on again, off again...it drove me nuts. Then one day it went out and stayed out. I now have over 4000 miles and it hasn't come on again. A lot of 2007 MC owners were experiencing the same thing...there are threads about it. I believe MINI has a software fix for this although my engine light issue seems to have resolved itself.

+1, mine does this every once in awhile as well. Especially in extreme temperatures and/or after a very aggressive drive. Extremely common issue. Some have gotten it fixed through a software upgrade.

flaco, curious if you're speaking from experience regarding the ALTA ECU. I'm considering purchasing it once they come out with a version for the auto transmission.

there's nothing wrong with the warning systems, you just need to take it to the dealer asap or the soft-fault will clear after a number of drive cycles without repeating it. & if it does clear & doesn't return, it was just an erroneous fault.

or get yourself a scantool/code reader & check it yourself.

I was feeling pretty smug with 8,000 miles and no engine light. Then it happened on a cold 15 degree day. Stayed on for a couple days; then the temperature went into the 30's and it hasn't happened since. Hate to drive 100 miles to my dealer unless it keeps happening.

The warning system is just doing its job, a simple software download at the dealership will correct the situation.

I got the same warning light shortly after installing Alta's CAI. The difference is the car now revs rapidly all by itself at idle... I can't get it to stop. Every second it's as though an invisible foot is blipping the throttle.

do you know something about recent software changes the rest of us don't ?

I have one of the first of the '08's (first week of dec. build) and like a small handful of people, I've been getting a p0420 catalyst efficiency fault since installing the Alta Turbo-back exhaust. Alta still doesn't have any answers/solutions for me.

Sounds like your baby is just rearing to go!

On the code reader - The code readers only get a percentage of all possible codes. Some are better than others, but only the dealer's machine will get every code and lots of info besides. Not saying that you shouldn't try your own code reader, just don't be surprised when the $40 reader says nuthin found. Also Autozone (and probably others as well) will plug in their reader for free.

Been happening with my car for about 3 months. Brecht Mini always says it's no big deal. It'll come on for a few days, then go away and then a week or two will pass before it starts again. Just had it last week for 3 days.
