Windows and Roof Open By Themselves

In the last week I've come out to my car to find the windows down and the roof tilted up. The first time I thought I might have accidentally squeezed the key and held down the unlock button but after the four time I knew that wasn't the case. I dropped it off at the dealer and they called me to pick it up and said it was all better. They claim it was a ground wire under the bonnet that there was a bulletin about. Well, one day later I came out after a meeting and again found it open and in the rain to add insult to injury.

Has anyone else run into this. The car is back at the dealer at the moment.

This same issue has plagued the MINI's of at least two other NAM'ers - not sure what the fix ended up being. Try doing a search, they're definitely on here and one was relatively recent. I believe I saw it in this forum.

I started the original thread. Our car is in for repair of this for the second time. The first time MINI denied there were EVER any problems with this and their PUMA file conclusion was give it back to the customer.

I got the top person at the dealership involved which only meant the car sat there for 3 weeks without them figuring it out. We picked it up unfixed.

Our occurs when there's rains and being SoCal that doesn't always happen. Although when we picked it up and washed it the door locks started to unlock themselves which is also a problem related to this issue.

Now our car is back at the dealer and has been there for over a week. I'm trying to get an update.

Its really insulting that BMW/MINI rather than accepting this is an issue just hides their heads in the sand saying its never happened.

I got confirmation this was a very common issue with BMWs and the first generation MINIs.

Any chance you slipped the keys in your pocket and the "unlock" switch was depressed by your key fob, loose change, or some other item in that same pocket?

With MINI's auto-down windows & roof, hold the button down and everything opens up. Same thing happened to a friend of mine with an '04... turned out that's what was happening.

Windows and Roof Open By Themselves-Update

I apologize for not updating my previous post about the mystery openings of the windows and roof on my 07 MC. Previously I posted that the problem was a body control module, however, that information was incorrect.

My service report from NW MINI at the end of November states:

Verified windows open after locking and vehicle locks and unlocks itself. Traced to microswitch in door latch/lock actuator harness. Removed window cartridge. Inspected harness. No damage. Found lock actuator shorted internally. Replaced lock actuator assembly. Tested ok.

The problem seems to be solved, although it took a week to order the part. I was offered a loaner, but didn't need it.

Very glad to hear the issue has been resolved.

My '07 MCS has done the same thing twice so far in 3500 miles in about 2 months - Just come out in the morning and find all open. don't think it's the fob as we live in a apartment and the car is farther away then the fob will reach. Really bad coming out in the AM to find all down and unlocked. Can't leave anything in the car right now.

Well, they said they updated the firmware and that would take care of it but they wanted to keep it over night to test. They called me and said it was not fixed. Mini told them to pull the driver door panel and check for wetness but they found none. At this point they don't know what to do and are contacting Mini again. I do have a loaner. Will keep you all updated.

This sounds like one of the highly prized features that has been held over from the R50/R53 cars. Seems as though it would show up in them sporadically also.

Dealer claims it is a door lock module and ordered one today. I'll report back if it fixes the problem.

Dealer ordered and replaced door lock module and so far so good. FYI if someone else runs into this problem.

Sounds like the exact same fix as Blue Skies 05. Assuming that his "lock actuator" and your "door lock module" are the same part.
Glad to hear everything worked out.
