07 Turbo MINI Fuel Economy n Twin Scroll Turbo Question

Hello. I have been looking into buying an 07 Turbo Mini. I noticed that the dealer claims it is pretty good on fuel. It is said to do 29mpg in city and 36mpg on highway. But since its turbo, wouldn't it only get that kind of economy as long as the turbo does not spool up to full boost? Also not sure what the twin scroll turbo means.

It is GREAT on fuel! When commuting to work each day, in spite of the "slinkys" on I-85 north of Charlotte, the first week I was getting 35.7 mpg. I now have 2500 mi. on Li'l Red, and the fuel mileage has increased to 37.4 mpg. On the weekends, with combined city/highway/occaisional foot-in-it, he still manages 33 mpg. You don't have to put your foot in it to have fun. The engine is so torquey, it will still respond well from 1500 rpm. In fact, until you get used to it, if you do put your foot in it, it may be scary. Mine was. About the turbo.... (someone correct me if this is not right) the scroll case in a turbine is where the driving fluid (in this case, exhaust gas) moves in a circle around the runner (impeller) and moves thru the runner, imparting its energy to the runner. The velocity of the gases causes the turbo to spool up. The energy of the gases is a product of velocity and volume. A smaller scroll case causes the velocity of the gases to be greater (faster spooling), but has less flow (volume) potential. A twin-scroll turbo has 2 smaller scroll cases, side-by-side, each of which have higher gas velocity than a single scroll turbo. Due to losses from the smaller scroll cases, a twin scroll will spool up quicker (better response at low end) but has less total flow potential on top end. A single scroll turbo has more total flow, but the gas velocity is lower, slower to spool up, but flows more at high rpm. Another advantage of the twin-scroll is that the two inlets to the scroll cases are separated, and lessen the effect of pressure pulses at the runner caused by valve overlap, when the exhaust gas from an individual cylinder decreases from the intake valve and exhaust valve being open simultaneously. Two cylinders feed into one scroll case, and two feed into the other. This way, one of the scroll cases has full gas velocity and pressure, while the other has less, due to valve overlap. I guess more simply put, the single-scroll could be compared to a large, single cylinder engine, and the twin scroll could be compared to a twin cylinder engine, as far as smoothness and response is concerned. Maybe someone else has a better analogy.

RNR I was referring to the '07 hardtop. The 07 cabrio still has a supercharger which I would not consider buying as turbo has more potential. Li'l Red's Rider thanks for the info. That makes sense with the twin scroll turbo especially to help make it more fuel efficient and more torquey at lower rpm.

the fuel economy isn't necessarily with no boost. Ive been able to get a pretty solid 32-33 mpg avg. The direct injection turbo is a pretty modern efficient engine. Very close to efficient diesel technology and unfortunately the motor sounds like a diesel sometimes. The twin scroll mean that turbo is split up into two chambers. I don't know the cylinder numbers, but the purpose is to keep the cyclic nature of the exhaust more constant by separate the four exhaust into two streams instead of one into the turbo. This is helps the turbo work better at low speeds and get good low end torque.

I'm getting 29.5 with air conditioner on in a mix of country road, city, and highway driving. I have something of a lead foot.

my mpg...

I have an 07 MCS.... I consistently get about 29.5mpg mixed driving (maybe 70% hwy/30% city). On highway, I can get 32mpg fairly easy by driving legally. I've been as low as 27.5mpg for a tank when I'm really enjoying jack rabbit starts from stoplight to stoplight....

Overall, I'm VERY happy with the '07 fuel economy. And performance

Since I am in California and seem to never move at certain times of the day, my milage really ranges. It seems though the average fuel economy for me is around 28-29 miles and sometimes as high as 32. Never seen 35-36.

I do have to say that I am also very happy with the fuel economy.
Keep in mind that I drive 70% city and have the automatic. My averages for the last few months have been ranging from 29-31 mpg.

I really do not understand some of these low figures that are being posted.

I have owned my 2007 MCS for two monthes now and have over 7,900 miles on it (all mine) I have never seen anything below 32.0 MPG. I, on most days, drive my MCS like I stole it. If I drive normally, I get between 34-37 MPG around town and have seen it as high as 41 MPG with the cruise set at 62 MPH on the highway.

Again nothing ever below 32 MPG on a tank. I always fill with premium fuel (91 Octane or higher).

When stating millage numbers it would be helpful if you also told us if the number being used was from the OBC or calculated by a human.

From everything I read the computer states a number a bit higher then reality.

Figure 6 is the example of a twin scroll (i think)

The every tank I've calculated by hand has been within 1.5 mpg of the computer.

I consistantly get 30-32 mpg with 50/50 city/hwy (hwy is often in rush hour traffic) and drive with sport button and ac on all the time. I also drive pretty fast when the hwy is clear.

Cruising at a steady 65 on level ground the realtime obc reports 40+mpg.

My 29.5 is OBC, in California, 91 Octane. Since California has a special blend required for air quality, perhaps a different mpg would be obtained in a different state? My OBC number has always been close to the tank calculation.

I've been driving the car hard. Pedal is always to the floor be it the gas or brake pedal. Get around 19mpg.

Sometimes I reset it on the highway and behave just to see what happens and I get high 30s on the highway.

I must agree. My wife and I have had our MCSm for 2 months (1800 miles). Never below 31.5mpg. Trip to Virginia (7 hours) 37.7mpg, mixed avg 34mpg. We are very pleased. That said, I bought the car for quick speed first, milage second.

I thought a twin scroll turbo had two different driving options in which to spool up the turbo. One scroll was optimized for low rpm and another for high rpm.

Can I get a word up?

MINI is just a phenomenal car. MINI is light yet safe, frugal yet high performance.
Twin scroll is to decrease the turbo lag. And turbo is to save weight and gas.

On my second tank of gas in my mini I got 23.5mpg on Shell 93oct V-Power. This was 100% city driving with rush hour stop and go traffic on week day morning and afternoons. This was a hand calculated number also. I'm hoping to get a better run out of this new tank of gas.
