Anyone consider the BMW 135i instead of an MCS

The reason I post here is because it seems the price will be pretty close to a loaded Cooper S (estimated $35k), and very close to a JCW MCS (guestimated price).

The 135 will have 300HP and 300 ft-lbs of torque. It'll basically fly. I've been thinking about it since it's just a little more than a loaded MCS and will be FAST. I know it doesn't have the heritage in the same way as the Mini, but it being touted as the present day 2002, which pretty much defined the sports sedans for BMW.

When it comes time to replace the Ghost, it'll be the first car I test drive along with a new Mini.

I'm not considering one until they actually come here next year. And even then I'd prefer the 5dr 120d version. They really need to bring over at least one of the hatchback versions.

3400 lbs?! WHAT?! That is just absurd for the size of car a 1-series is.

Should be a great car, just not a small go kart. Wt to HP will be really good, but overall mass may a little much.

I'm guessing when its time to replace Spud, the 135 won't be available as a new car anymore (around 2019).

I think the 1-series will be amazing. That said, it's still on the hairy edge of more-than-I'm-willing-to-pay for a car in the next few years. I'm pretty sure it will meet the expectations everyone is setting for it

from 1series.com forum---

No fog lights on 135i for sure
a tad over 3400 lbs. for the official weight.
And finally, they refer to the 135i as the 135i M Sport in all the paragraphs which furthers my assumption there will be no M1

I agree on the weight issue. Take a look at the HP/Kg or lb......that might make things a little diff?

It's on the front page of www.bmwusa.com

Unfortunately, we won't get the 5 door hatch, which is hot right now, because BMWNA is convinced we don't want a hatchback... that was 15 years ago when they gave us the 318is which was totally underpowered.

I think they'll change their mind regarding the 5 door hatch once they see all the MazdaSpeed3's, Sub WRX/STi's that are selling in the same configuration. It's one of these things were you think, well a little more money and I could have 300HP, twin turbo car; though it should weigh around 3,200 lbs for it's size.

I was initally thinking a bout it...

but check out the Top Gear comparo between the new 1 series and the GTI. Turns out that while it's amazing on paper, it doesn't handle that well, and really, the Top Gear guys panned it pretty hard.

Matt

ps, the curb weight is more than my 65 Mustang, that has a V8, a 4-pt roll bar, and sub-frame connectors that are beefy enough to build sky-scapers out of! And it's more by over 200 lbs! While the power is the same (about) as my mustang, the wheel base is shorter (great for autoX, bad for road courses, and freeway expansion joints). This seems to be a car that started good, and was destroyed by the "committees".

I travel a lot and have the fortune of seeing (& riding in) one of these. 3400lbs or no, they move. I was at nearly 5000ft altitude though, so there was a little hesitation and something that left you wanting more, but moved nonetheless.

I just have never liked any Bimmers in hatchback form though. Looks goofy.

I am going to order a 135i M Sport just as soon as I can - my local (ish) BMW dealer have me on the list to call as soon as they have the go-ahead to order them !

Black paint/leather/trim and minimal options

3400lbs and 300hp is a lot better than my current ~180hp and 2800lbs.

Rear wheel Drive is way more fun than FWD....
