My boot is rattling!!

I have noticed over the last couple of days that there is a rattling coming from the boot (still trying to get used to calling it that) of my car. It is only when I go over bumps in the road, but it is pretty loud and annoying. I did a search and did not find much on rattles in the boot, just in the dash.

Has anyone had any problems with this or has anyone fixed it. It is unfortunately a bit inconvenient for me to get to the dealership so hoping it is something I can fix myself. Only thing in the boot right now is the nets that came with the car, and they are all setup so don't think they would cause it.

My boot is rattling. I feel like I should be in a cowboy outfit when I say that.

Have you checked the "tool kit" compartment under the floor.

That would be my guess as well.

If it is an MC, check the spare tire mounting to see if it loose as well.

Also check both back seats. They are pretty tight in there, keeps them from falling over, but, they will rattle if they didn't get latched.

the latch was the culprit for my rattle! The moving part in the receiver is plastic coated, when it wears it makes metal to metal contact with the catch( U-bolt part on the boot) and rattle with every flex of the chassis .
Fix: a couple wraps of electrical tape around the catch, check if it works and if the car under waranty, trip to the dealer for replacement

I thought I had a rattle in my boot. Turned out to be a rear seat belt buckle sitting between the seat and side panel.

Occasionally, on certain road conditions, I'll hear a rattle from the left rear quarter on my R56S. It happens with the boot emptied of everything and with both back seats latched securely.

Prior to a trip pulling a trailer I asked the MINI service department to check the undercarriage to make sure nothing was loose. They did. No problems.

I discovered that, with the doors locked, the chrome faux gas cap has some play in it (maybe the rattle source). I tried to figure out some way of bracing it when the car is locked, but unfortunately, unlocking the car undoes any attempt of that sort. So, I decided that, because I hear that rattle so infrequently, I'll just let it go and try to ignore it.

Just now though, after reading LynnEl's comment, I went out and latched both rear seat belts. Maybe that's it. We'll see. I'll edit this later and let y'all know.

If you've narrowed it down to the latch vibrating, try this:

On the outer edges of the boot hatch, there apre rubber bumpers sticking out at about a 45-degree angle. The thread into the side of the door so that you can ajust their leangth. If they're threadded in too far, they won't provide enough pressur against the body of the car and the hatch will vibrate and rattle. If they're out far, they will be too long and interfere with the closing of the hatch.

For you, with the rattle (and you're SURE thats where its coming from)... turn the rubber bumbers out (counter-clockwise) a half turn each and drive for a couple days. If the rattle still pops up... try another 1/2 turn CCW and drive a couple more days. It will disappear after one of these adjustments.

Not trying to insult your intelligence, but the acoustics in the MINI can be weird when it comes to thunks/rattles. I had a rattle for a while that was driving me crazy, and it sounded like it was coming from the right-rear of the car. After tearing apart the boot, replacing everything, checking the suspension and finding nothing, I decided to empty the whole car out - boot, glove box, coin holder, armrest - everything.

I found out that the rattle was actually coming from a heavy ballpoint pen bouncing around in the passenger-side map pocket. How that rattle sounded like it was coming from the very back of the car, I have no idea, but I've similar things happen several times since, and now I just pretty much forget trying to localize the noise and just start looking for loose items *everywhere* in the car.

I've done the same thing! Tracked it down to a small Tranformer toy, just out od sight in the rear pocket, just out of sight . I could have sworn it was somthing in the rear headliner or the boot hatch rattling. Was driving me crazy!

I checked all the little storage areas and everything. I also tried the bumpers (did not give it a couple of days yet) but to no avail. I did notice last night that the ceiling liner seemed a little loose in the back and when I pushed up on it it seemed to click in, then click out like a clip was not holding. I will investigate further today when I get home from work.

Just a follow up to my rattle problem in case anyone is interested.

I pulled the rubber out along the top of the hatch and looked inside the roof liner last night. At dead center, there is a metal plate with a clip that goes into the roof that is glued (poorly) to the liner itself. The plate was no longer glues to the liner but was very loose and hanging by the clip.

I have not yet fixed this, but I am thinking that this is what is rattling and driving me crazy as I played with it a bit and definitely has the potential to be loud enough. I will be finding a way to re-fasten the plate to the liner after work tonight.

Small dollop of "Gorilla Glue" should do the trick.
