Researching for new car...2008 S Clubman Turbocharged?

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/5546809665.html

This CL ad is an example of a Clubman in my area that I might be interested in. (Seems like a good deal?) I am in my research phases on the mini's but this one appeals to me. I have not yet driven one but I plan to soon, possibly the one in this ad. I've read several not-so-good reviews on this model as far as maintenance issues/costs but I've also seen several good reviews. I could consider a different model, but I like the added space in the Clubman.

I currently drive a 2007 BMW 335xi with twin turbo engine. I love everything about it except the fuel economy and maintenance costs. I know that maintenance will not necessarily be cheaper on the mini, but I plan on learning to do my own oil changes this summer, which will save me $100+ a pop. So my main concern here is fuel economy. And I'm sorry, but I cannot go from my BMW to a used Prius. Maybe in a few years when the driving/technology is improved. I cannot afford nor do I want to buy anything new (I'm kind of against buying new).

Anyone have specific knowledge as to the reliability of this particular model? If I test drive this car, what questions should I ask/problems should I look for with the current 107k miles on it and with it being turbocharged? Any other tips?

Thank you SO much for your help!

Looks like a good deal on CL, but.... check it out thoroughly, maintenance records important! Look for oil & coolant leaks (bring a bright flashlight) and listen for any unusual engine sounds.

Have you researched the problems with the N14 engine, to include the possibility of massive oil consumption as well as timing chain issues?

The price is okay...it really boils down to whether or not you can deal with possible maintenance problems (DIY) and if the timing chain has been replaced.

Pull the dipstick and if there is any indication of low oil...run!

It is a nice looking car!

Not to mention the carbon buildup on the intake valves and the expense to remove it.

We had one (2008) loved it. Did have the timing chain replaced? This was early in its life.
Blew a turbo in Kansas. We had extended warranty. It was covered. Traded it off at 117,000 miles. Bought another one still driving this one. Did have the timing chain measured. Keeping an eye on length to catch any problem early. Our 2008 had a JCW kit put on when they came out with them. Loved the car.

I haven't had any out of pocket expenses with my 08 and it uses about a tablespoon of oil every 1,000 mi.

A little over 150,000 miles on mine.....all the usual maintenance and problem solving (like the turbo oil lines) done. I've owned it since new, so I know the maintenance and esp the oil changes have been done on schedule. Still a lot of fun to drive....planning on keeping for awhile.
