R55 Dodged the Bullit
Dodged the Bullit
Last month took wife's Clubman in for service and on invoice for the service it noted the Oil Pan was dented and drain plug damaged. Looked under it when I got home and there were scrapes on the pan and the plastic rock shield was damaged and hanging loose. Ordered a new one from ECS. This morning went out to finish spring clean up and detail on it jacked it up to replace shield and got a good look at oil pan. Wife ran over something, found out it was parking bumper in parking lot in the dark. Pan is scraped and dented and the oil plug is scraped pretty good. No oil leaks but will probabley get a new plug. most of the plastic under the nose is scraped. and a few fasteners are missing no visible damage to suspension, wheels or tires. Went to rear to check thing out couldn't jack it up the jack pad was missing jacked it up using the front one, again there is scrapes in the area of the jack pad and on the "frame" and some of the plastic and metal shielding. No visible damage to rear suspension, wheel or tire. Took it up into the foot hills east of Sacramento and drove the p*%$ out of it. No steering, braking or handling issues, no vibrations or funny noises. Car drove like it is suppose to. So we dodged the big one. Will watch the tires on the right side for wear problems and replace the jack pad and missing fasteners and probably the drain plug. This car came from New York and was bought as a CPO so while I was under there looked around and there was some corrosion but nothing that looked bad, so it probably wasn't driven to much in the winter and was taken care of. It is a 2011 and had 26K on it when we bought it, now has 33K. So we have to be careful when we park and not drive over curbs and bumpers, this thing is LOW not like our Expedition. I will repaint the pan to prevent rust. It looks like I could replace the pan if I need to would have to drop the exhaust to give room to remove pan, no need to it is not leaking at this time.

Sometime you just don't question been married almost 50 years. Now if she would have torn it up bad there would be a big problem. I have don't like myself so let it. Now I have replace the Glass Digitizer on her iPan Air the repair kit will be here tomorrow. Don't ask it would be easier to change the pan.

They did change the plug during the oil change just the gasket/seal as the damage was found during the service. Just ordered the Drain Plug, Jack Pad, and the fastener assortment as there are some missing fasteners under there not all from jumping the parking bumper. Will paint the pan and install the plug when everything get here. This car has the Hyper Sport Aero Kit and boy is that front end low. We have to learn not to pull so far in the parking spaces with curbs or bumpers. Is the oil Pan steel or Aluminum ?

I ran over one of those once.. made it half way and decided it was better just to keep going over it rather than back out now, haha. Thankfully I had a massive skid plate on the car. Might be a good investment for the Mini as well. Just keep your eye on the pan and definitely change out that plug.

Looking at the scratch it doesn't look that bad. I'd love to sell you an oil pan but if it was my car I would just put the new drain plug in and go on with my day. I've seen cars in the shop with worse and they still work fine.
All I am going to do is sand the pan down prime and paint it then change the drain plug, replace the missing jack pad a some missing Fasteners. 2 were from going over the obstacle and a couple are just missing. Found out she ran over a raised divider she showed me today when we went to Lowe's it is a raised concrete divider about 6" high an 10" across it is to stop people from making a left turn when leaving Lowe's I was a dark raining night and she was going to make a U turn and didn't see it. We had a discussion about how to park and drive the Mini because it doesn't have the ground clearance of the Expedition and Toyota pick up. In fact with the Hyper Sport Aero kit the front valance is even lower than stock, just went out and measured 5 1/4 inches of clearance so it easy to scrape and damage. The parts will be here Saturday so next week I will do the repairs. Going to pick our Wine Club wine on Saturday. No sign of oil leaks so once the pan is painted and the drain plug replaced should be good and not noticeable. The divider looked like it had been driven over both way a few time, lot of chips and chunks missing.

Time to park further out in the lowe's parking lot.
Yea the front end does sit a bit low and with an Sport Aero or even JCW Aero kit you have to watch the front lower lip also.

The real bullet that you dodged was that you have a R55, with a steel oil pan vs. the aluminum one of the earlier cars. Steel will scratch and dent, aluminum will break. Here's one time where cheaper manufacturing actually helped you!
We were lucky She was traveling 25 mph when she trid the U turn and hit that diveder. The dent as they call it is not that bad. More scrapes than any thing the pulg js really scraped up. The rest of the damage is from scraping along taking off the Jack Pad and a fastener near it. When the part get Saturday I will put the Jack Pan on and replace any missing fasteners and will do the pan next week when I have more time. I have to say that little is one strong little thing. Just thankful there was not susenison , tire or wheel damage.

My package from MCS didn't arrive Saturday like expected/scheduled by FEDX. Now it say no know when it will be delivered. Any big wrecks between Ohio and Calif. since Tuesday. Wonder if it got caught by some of that bad weather between here and there. Thank goodness it wasn't something critical. Off to the foothills for wine tasting and to pick our wine club shipments. Beautiful day good for open sunroof and windows down. Put it in shift yourself mode and motor on.
