pillar rattle noise driving me beserk...

On both of our Clubmans it sounds as if it's in the pillars (on her car it's both sides). I've posted a video on youtube but it's not so good...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ad3kxlAEEo

A search yielded a possible solution but I think the rattle that individual is talking about is in the door since he points to another thread wherein the door is disassembled...

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...le-solved.html

Just wondering if any other Clubmans have endured this really annoying rattle (I have tried to felt and foam tape around the seatbelt pivot but no luck). Sounds like it is higher up the pillar, even above the pillar light??

Any help greatly appreciated.

Two things: since it's a brand new vehicle, send it to the dealer for squeak / rattle reduction.
Or tear into it yourself, isolate the problem, fix / mute with proper adhesive foam tape, and be happy since you know you're doing it right the first time.

It's not that hard to get into it, especially if you're mechanically inclined.

We have the same sounding rattle in our '09 Clubman S. Ours is in the plastic area by the passenger back seat around the seat belt retract area. Had the dealer look at it with no success at salving the problem. Hoping this winter to try to fix it myself since our dealer is over 200 miles away. Best of luck to you on a fix.

I pulled my pillar housing off (remove the pillar light by pulling straight out and then undo the torq screw and then you'll have to pull the plastic up and away) and then I put a lot of felt tape and adhesive foam in there but that did not work.

Then got the Mrs to get in the back and she was able to make the sound stop by pushing on the window at the very back by the other plastic housing (the has air bag logo cover). So I've taken that cover off (same way except you remove the air bag plastic cover and the torq screw is exposed under that) and put a lot of foam and felt tape there. Too tired to drive tonight to see if I got this thing finally but I'll let you know (might need reminding).

cheers.

I think I may be experiencing the same rattle as described in this thread. It's a kind of dead metal on plastic rattle. This all started about 3 months ago, it's annoying, it's getting worse, and I'm getting tired of it!

I originally thought it was the rear passenger seatbelt against the side panel but I wrapped them both in rags to isolate them but the rattle is still there. Sounds as if something behind the rear side panel is the cause.

Keep posting your findings, hopefully someone will find the source of this aggravation.

Your video sounds the same as the rattle i get form the door lock button on my car. if the lock is up it rattles if it is down it does not.

May not be your specific problem but just another thought.

Thanks I tried that as well and it's still there regardless of whether the door is locked or not. The other thing is that I have the anthracite liner and if you sit and move that over the plastic pillars you get a heck of a noise and that might be the case with the liner back at the very most rear pillar (I need someone to point me to a diagram with the correct names for these different pillars)... It's raining today and since me and the Mrs work at the same place, we drove together in her car so that I'd only have to wash one tomorrow

I'll keep everyone informed of my efforts/findings...

I had a rattle in my 09 Clubman S right from the start. I brought it back to the dealer a couple of times. Once they fixed the rear seat clip, as one of the other posters mentioned, but the rattle was still there. The rear doors were disassembled and reassembled without success. The sound seemed to come somewhere behind and to the left of the drivers head.
They finally asked me to leave the car for a day or so. They ended up taking out the headliner, padding and reattaching cables, straps etc. No more rattle. And I have not had a problem since.

Good luck.

My wife does not have the liner and I don't think she has the noise but previously I did think she had a similar noise but now I'm not so sure. I intend on felt-taping the passenger side pillar covers and also intend on felt-taping the liner where it touches these pillars.

Thanks to all for the help and BEST of the season to all.

Count me in on this. While I have seen the video on how to take the door apart, I am not too mechanically inclined so I will not attempt it. I am one of those annoying super sensitive to sounds people and this drives me nuts. I don't have time do go in and out of the dealer trying to get them to fix so I will just live with it, for now!

you have to isolate the moving parts which are tabs in this case.remove the pillars and try to restrain any loose tabs. You can do it just keep at it.

Thinking it's the liner...

Out of all of us with this issue how many of us have the anthracite liner? I am thinking that AVMini101 is right on the money because I don't think I hear the noise when driving my wife's car??? Previously I thought I heard her's make the noise from the passenger side but drove 200 miles yesterday in hers and didn't hear a squawk

So how many of you with this rattle also have the liner?

Merry Christmas !!

I have the rattle and my Clubman has the standard Gray headliner. I don't think its the headliner color that matters.

Yikes!!!

Sheesh...

I thought the anthracite was a different material hence the $250 upcharge. Feeling pretty silly but I guess it's obvious that I found my car on the lot as opposed to ordering it!!! I am desperate to find the rattle but not desperate enough to think it has to do with color of the headliner

Cheers!!

think it's the rear window...

I've taken off the pillar covers (rear and behind the driver) and stuffed a lot of foam tape between the window and the pillars and things seem to be much better because I drove on the worst chip 'n seal for 40 miles and "think" I heard the rattle once. My next move is to put a bunch of foam underneath the liner as has been mentioned elsewhere. The saga continues...

I think I have felt taped every conceivable part of the pillar cover and the wires that it houses. I still have the noise but have an appointment to have it looked at next Thursday (I also have a pop when I hit bumps that seems to come from the passenger's dash). I've put so much felt tape into this thing it's crazy. I'm going to try and see how tight the seatbelt anchor is and I'm wondering about taking some expanding spray foam insulation and squirting it beweeen the pillar and door)... since that seems really really desperate I thought I best drive the 125 miles to the dealership and let them work their magic (though I don't know how much chip n seal there is in the Dallas metroplex area). Anyone have any kind of luck locating this noise yet?

As I have stated before I have the same problem. I am hoping your dealer has some insight into this problem because it's beginning to really bother me.

I have the same rattle and it makes me HATE my car! I think this will be my last MINI. It has been into the dealer twice for the problem.

In my clubbie, it's the sunscreen. When it's retracted, it rattles. Check that.

Take out the hearing aids dude. The thing has rattles, OK? It's the British quirkiness, like the big speedo.

I did find messing with that cut one rattle down a lot. Just mess with it.

Not sure if it is the same rattle or not; can't access you-tube to listen, but I have isolated the rattle as being the rear seat speaker cover....and another but is I'm in the Cooper not Clubman. Hope you find soon.
