Strange Noise on JustaClubman

I have an 09 JustaClubman, purchased in February of this year. When I shut off the car, I will hear a poof sounds every 15-20 seconds after I shut off the car, almost like back pressure from the exhaust. Eventually, it will stop, but is this normal? I read somewhere else this is the gas tank bleeding pressure. The strange thing is every once in a while, I will hear a similar noise at a stoplight. Other than this strange noise, the car drives and sounds fine. Any thoughts?

Can't say i have every heard that sound from any car. But the explanation you gave sounds plausible.

Can you pinpoint where the sound is coming from?

That may help us to find the absolute answer.

It is coming from underneath the car, towards the exhaust. I can
definitely hear a fan running underneath at the same time. Once the car stops making the noises (which is usually a double poof noise), the fan shuts off as well.

I just did a search, and it seems like these gentlemen in the Cooper forums have been experiencing these noises as well.

yeah I get this as well. I hear it often as I usually shut off the car and have to wait in it for Alternate Side Street Parking.

have no idea what it is, but it does sound like some "puff" type of sound coming from the rear.

would be cool to get a definite answer.

I hear it too, but not all the time. That said, I used to hear this on my '06 MC (cvt transmission), too. Almost like an extremely muted backfire. Have mentioned it to service dept on both cars and told it's normal. I always thought it was an automatic related noise.

I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S and I've heard what I think is the noise you describe. When I took my MINI to the dealer for the new intake manifold design (frozen throttle body valve; caused low power on cold startups), I asked that they check this noise. My best description of the noise is the noise a car makes when it's parked on an incline and you apply the parking brake, then release your foot from the brake pedal to get out of the car. The car "creaks" a bit, almost as if the parking brake isn't quite holding. The odd thing is that the MINI does it on both inclines and flat ground and does it intermittently. The MINI dealer found no problems with the brakes and said to just "keep an eye on it" and see if it becomes more frequent. *shrug*

EDITED TO ADD: I forgot to mention that I have a 6 speed manual transmission.

I heard the same thing in my Clubman and have been wondering if it is a problem or not. If anybody gets any information from the dealer that it is a problem that needs to be fixed, please post!

^ I looked here and will probably try taping the hatch loop first. Seemed to work for these folks:

The rattle in that forum seems like a different problem than what is described here. Mine at least is a strange thunk sound occasionally when stopped at a light or parked.

Ah...I see. I'll keep my eyes peeled. I haven't experienced that type of noise yet. Good luck!

Yep. I hear it too. Kind of like a soft thump. Very hard to localize, but comes from aft. Hadn't heard any fan though.

I had talked with my mechanic about this when I first got the car and he was telling me that it's the gasses/exhaust system cooling down and letting out pockets of air. Mine won't happen if the car hasn't been able to warm up (3 mile runs wont let it happen). If I'm on it and then come to a stoplight, it sometimes happens (has time to cool a little).

As for the fan noise in that region; that is the fuel pump priming itself. Kinda crazy that it primes itself after being ran and lasting for so long sometimes, but thats what it is. It is on some threads on here

Try this experiment: Park, but keep engine running. Get out and remove gas cap, might even hear a woosh of pressure release. Get back inside, and kill the engine. Does the noise still happen?

The sound is normal purging of the fuel tank pressure. There's a canister in front of the rear passenger wheel that the popping/humming sound originates from.

I get the same noise as well, so we are all saying this is just normal? dont know why it would ONLY happen in a mini you would think if this was it that other cars would have the same noise. is it normal to happen so often my 09 justacooper does it about 11 times everytime i shut off the car......seems like it would only need to do it once.
