R55 MSRP vs. "out the door"
MSRP vs. "out the door"
Thought it would be interesting if folks could share what their "out the door" (or "out of pocket", i.e., actual) price was verses their MSRP of the mini that was purchased.
I know taxes differ from state to state as fees do, just thought it would be informative to know the actual cost and what to expect.
Especially if you live in Florida, like me.
Thanks.
MSRP: $28,950
Actual: $31,100

I am in South Florida:
MSRP was $26,200
OTD was $28,500 (Give or take).
Bought the Clubman S auto (Ordered Dec '07, took delivery late Feb '08) at Lauderdale MINI in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (this is MINI #4 bought new from them since 2002).
Broward county sales tax is 6.5% versus Miami-Dade's which is 7%. Another advantage in purchasing a MINI outside of Dade county.

The add ons are going to be somewhat unique to your state and maybe even county/city. Here in Houston, Texas, sales tax is 6.25% (if you trade something in you only pay taxes on the difference), state maximum doc fee is $50, license/title fees about $100, and a handful of other taxes/fees about $50. Tax will vary of course based on sales price, but the other fees should be the same for any MINI.
Unless you REALLY want the car NOW I don't see much of a reason to pay more then MSRP. I realize that in some areas the demand is so high that people "must" pay more then MSRP. If you ordered the car, you should already have the price in hand right? If you gave them a deposit your price is locked in (or at least it should be). From that you can figure out the extras:
Sales taxes are easy to calculate. Remember that in some (maybe all?) places the value of your trade in is subtracted before sales taxes is calculated. So for example:
Price: $26,200
Trade - $2000
= $24,200
Sales tax of 6.5%
$24,200 * 0.065 = tax of $1573 (added to car price - trade) = $25,773
(Short cut is $24,200 * 1.065 = $25,773)
Registration is usually $50-$100
Some places have a "Processing Fee" which in general is BS but I've seen it in Va for as high as $450, but $180 is more common. The MINI dealership has it printed on the sales slip so that it looks like it can't be taken off.
Extended warranty is about $1000-2000 depending on what you're buying. They often don't even bring this up until you're in the financing room (and past the negotiating phase). Remember that this is a dealer add-on and the price is also something you can talk them down on. If the warranty costs you $1000, it probably only cost the dealer $500 so they make a lot of profit on these. When you're working on them, tell them to "throw in" the extended warranty and see where it gets you.
Hope that helps, don't let the lure of a shiny new MINI convince you to pay more then you want to.

Well with the 09 convertible prices not being officially released I dont know what the MSRP is. SC has a $300 tax cap and they charged me a $284 tag/title fee. No mention of a "dealer fee" yet but I imagine it will materialize come March when my car comes in. Plus theres the labor costs with dealer accessories that arent mentioned...
Hmmm those "payments" sounds a lot like bribes......
I was told by Costco that the MINI was too popular and as a result wasn't part of the Costco program. How'd you score that?
I had no trade and my deal went like this....
2008 Clubman S HC/S:
MSRP $26,200
Fees:
Florida Battery + Tire = $6.50
Dealer fee = $499
Amount taxable = $26,705.50
Plus
Sales tax (6.5% Broward county, Florida) = $1,602.33
License, tag and registration fees = $36.35
Misc fee = $2.00
Other taxes = $50.00
Cash balance due = $28,396.18
Less cash down payment = $13,000
Unpaid balance of cash price = $15,396.18
I financed the unpaid balance with MINI Financial Services as follows:
Amount to be financed = $15,450.43
Interest rate on the loan = 6.04% (Lowest they could get me at the end of Feb 2008)
Finance charge = $1,483.25
Number of payments = 36 months
Monthly payment = $470.38
Total of payments = $16,933.68
Total sale price including downpayment and cost of credit = $29,933.68
I have 30 payments left on the car and plan to pay it off early.
Hope this helps.
