Curious about this because I don't have one...

I haven't had a name for either of my MINIs, but yes it is something of a tradition. Still...lots of owners do not (or in my case can not) choose a name.

I don't have my MINI yet, but if I do name it it'll be between me and the car only. I honestly get a little weirded out when people refer to their car as a person.

I don't have an 'official' name for my MINI (actually, I don't have my 'official' MINI yet either, but that's a whole 'nother story). I was thinking if I did actually name the car, it would kind of be along the lines as Tu13es stated above. Telling my girlfriend about that, with a cavalier "we're really not the type to name our vehicles, are we?", she reminded the green car is referred to as Pickle 6 (anybody, (ANYBODY) ever see or hear Schnapsie the talking daschaund as a kid?), the red tractor is referred to as 'The Pepper' and the Subie is "Bessie". What the heck was I thinking???

You have to name it. State Law. Really.

No not really, was seeing if any Donnie Baker fans are out there.

Mine's not named.

No name for your MINI then you must turn in your NAM login immediately!

Not naming your MINi is like not naming a boat. It's just not kosher ... or something like that!

They have so much personality, I don't see how you *couldn't* name them!

Yes, that is an excellent point. I never thought of it in that way. My MINI has a name and I was always amused at how may people scoff at the idea. Yet I have NEVER seen a boat of any worth that wasn't named and no one has a problem with that. And my MINI is more personality than any boat!

I don't have a name for my car. I also call it a 'Clubman', not a 'Clubbie'.

Agreed! (And two of 'em would be Clubmen, not Clubmans - as BMW would have it!)

You don't have to name your MINI, but I have to agree that these cars have their own personality and a name can represent that personality.

I never looked at it that way but your right.
My boats name was "Ms.N.Work?" I should have named my MINI "I'm Ms.N.Work Too"

Of course you should name your MINI, unless of course you just bought it for the gas mileage then its just transportation to and from a destination.

I kinda have the feeling that you need to name something like a child, or car, or wife, or pet, - only is necessary if you have more than one.

There are several Mini owner's with more than one Mini. In that situation I can understand the need. You just can't say, 'Honey - I'm taking the Mini'. She'll say, 'Which one?'.

But with one wife, or child, or pet, you just say 'I'm taking my wife out to dinner'. Or, 'I'm taking the kid to the movie'.

Since I only have one (Mini in a couple of weeks) of each, I can get away with not naming any of them. Though the 'kid' is starting to get teased alot at pre-school.

Lol, my wife has a tendency to name all her cars. I named mine mostly as a joke, it does make a good conversation topic though.

No you don't HAVE to name your MINI, but...like everybody said: this car has lots of personality and often each one has it's OWN personality. Mine actually told ME what it's name was - telepathically, of course. The car can't TALK. Duh! ( )

To those nay-sayers, I would advise you to "never say never." Even if you don't name it like you would a pet, you might fall into a particular reference for it. It gets REALLY boring to keep saying / discussing / referring to "The MINI" or "My MINI" etc. Besides, if you haven't had enough coffee, that many Mmmms in a sentence can really screw up your mouth.

I also won't be naming my car, although I've been living and breathing Mini's lately its something I just don't do. What good is a name? If you call it it won't come with the newspaper, slippers etc.

Oh please! Stay with the few and proud nameless minis!!
No name. I am sorry but you are free to name your car, but it still feels very strange to me when I read on threads "oh no _______ is sick!"...what?....its a car, give it up.

Well if you are weirded out by people naming their car what about the people that name their boat, house, large office building, stereo equipment, etc. with human names.

Actually talking about a human that has been injured is even more creepy sometimes, especially when people start talking about their operations and the blood an gore of it.

Mine may not actually talk to me but it does sign to me every time I have the radio on.

Well my car and my dog treat me with love and affection all the time, i can't say that about my family members so why not give my car a loving name.

You know, I gave the car a name, but I don't usually VERBALLY use it...only when referring to it among other MINI-ists to avoid confusion.

* Wait - yours doesn't bring your slippers & pipe to you????

Hahah I'd still be weirded out if I ran into someone that had a human name for their office building. Is that something that some people actually do? I know they do for boats....but buildings?
