aside from boats, which have 2 decals on them traditionally, the registration number and the name...naming for boats is a tradition from thousands of years ago which had a purpose, i think something like they got christened with a name to honor soldiers who went out to sea just in case they died, each country had different rituals...the rest of the stuff you listed, if you're naming your stereo...umm....yeah.....

the point was not that people or cars get injured, but the way people referr to their cars

oh i c this is like naming your stereo...so your stereo must be a singer too? alto or soprano?

are you telling me you name inatimate objects human names and referr to them as people to fill certain gaps? ... your car doesn't treat you good, its a machine, its going to break down in a few years and then you will spend another $25k for a new one.

Those are dealer installed options

I've never named my cars before my MINI.

Her name came after I configured her. When it was time to save the configuration it asks you for a name. I thought about different chocolates, and when I thought of Godiva, I knew I'd had it!

I don't care if people think it's weird/strange/"creepy" (really don't see how it can be seen as that, but OK? ). I'm sure there are plenty of things they do in their life that I'd think is strange, too.

Bottom line is, MINIs are all about individuality. Do whatever you want to make the car "yours". If it involves a name...cool. If it doesn't...cool. Trick it out with mods? cool. Keep it stock? cool.

I think it's rude to diss someone just because you don't have the same opinions. Agree to disagree.

And that's my two cents. Motor ON!

Does the naming process come easier once you've been united with your MINI? I see so many clever names on the boards and am hoping that I can come up with something as great once we meet.

Yup. But it doesn't always happen right away....so make a list and be patient!

I'm with Lady Godiva. And mine has an "official" first name (from the configurator) and an unofficial last name that I may or may not share. It all depends on who's asking

Hmm. Never have named a car before. I do refer to my GPS unit as "Karen" after one of the pre-named dialect options. Hey, "she" helps me navigate through unknown cities--doesn't that deserve a name?

Indeed. My satnav is called "Jane" for the same reason but my Clubman only talks to me though other senses ...

When I was waiting for my Clubman, I kept thinking of names to name it once it arrives. When I finally picked it up, it did not feel natural for me to give it a name. I've had it for over two months now, and it remains nameless. I just refer to it as "my car".

If you don't have a name for your Mini, well, I'll have to report you to the authorities as a possible, future serial killer.
Pick something.

I personally don't think it is a big issue one way or the other. Some people like to name cars, others don't. I am of the opinion not to name a car. I never have and doubt I will start now. It won't mean I am any less enthusiastic about the car any more than someone who has named one is an obsessive lunatic who can't be trusted!

To me naming cars really took a turn for the worse after the remake of Gone in 60 seconds. I never liked Nicholas Cage much to begin with, and all the obsessing over Eleanor and his acting in general pretty much turned me off to the concept. But that is my opinion, which won't get you much these days!

Do whatever you feel like. You will know if it is the right thing to do, and in the end the only opinion that matters is yours, no one else.

Although my MINI does have a name "DILLIGAD" I don't really find myself using it.
The cars that I have had in the past that have given me problems are the ones that I have talked to and coaxed into starting one more time by using its name.
You know... Something like: Come on Christine start for me one more time and I'll let you kill again.

Yes, cabriopilot, I agree! My car's name is Mints - but that was IT'S choice, not MINE. I mean...is that really a NAME??? But that's the one it wanted. It waited a whole year to tell me, too -- just popped into my head one day and would not leave (kinda like one of those annoying tunes or songs you overhear a bar of, and can't stop singing it?) I say "it" because it hasn't told me if it's a boy or a tom-boy-girl yet. I suspect it's a boy, though. I don't normally refer to it as "Mints" in general conversation - just to avoid the "Christine" thing (which is creepy).

Beasleyboy - there are numerous threads detailing MINI names! Some great ideas, too.

I'm still curious.....do people actually affectionately name the buildings they work in as mentioned previously?

Well if you are weirded out by people naming their car what about the people that name their boat, house, large office building, stereo equipment, etc. with human names.

I call the building I work in "HELL" or if I'm in a good mood then I call it "SATAN'S PLAYGROUND".

I am genuinely concerned but will just sit back and enjoy the ride.

For the life of me I couldn't find a name for my mini. It was my 3rd mini in 3 months and I just couldn't think of a name.

THEN, one day it just came to me... I walked outside and saw Ernie.

Point is, let it go, it'll come.
