Spare Tire extra?

Question for you wise clubman owners.

My wife is looking at a clubman, i know the cooper s (mine) does not come with a spare tire, but can't seem to find any info if the clubman (non s) comes with a spare tire like the cooper (non s).

thanks for any help, and any other info you want to throw in is always welcome.

Looking at getting
Prem, conv packages, alarm, and xenons. in Nightfire red /black.

My assumption is if the car has runflats on it, then there won't be a spare tire. I've picked that up on other threads on here. I have runflats and still picked up a spare. If there's room in the car, then why not carry one? Thats my theory.

I have the base Clubman with 15" tires, which are not run-flats. A temporary spare was included as standard equipment.

Did you pick up the spare from the dealer, or? How much did it run? Is it a fullsize spare, or a temp tire?

Thanks

I've seen them new for about $200 aftermarket. I picked up mine from a wrecking yard in Missouri. It was $60 including shipping. It had never been used and is in great shape.

Its a 'donut' spare that fits right in the spare tire 'tub' under the boot.

All Clubmans have room for the temporary spare, which is located inside the vehicle, under the cargo area. I'm not sure who gets one standard and who does not, but the non-run-flat 15" wheels on the base Clubman come with the temporary spare as standard equipment. There's the spare, then a styrofoam cover over the spare that holds the jack and some tools, then the second cover which is part of the floor of the storage area.

ALL MINI Cooper Clubmans get a spare tire regardless of tire diameter. The S has room for it but does not get one.

Because you get run flats, so in theory you shouldn't need it and you can use the spare tire area to hold beer.....

...drink enough beer, and you'll grow your own spare tire!

I use the spare tire space for towels and a spray bottle for quick cleanups of the baby. Micro rags for brake dust store here too.

The theory behind runflats is to save weight by not carring a spare. Thus, increasing performance, and gas mileage. Why would anyone want to pack around a spare if they have runflats?

We do alot of desert driving and by reading threads on NAM, a bunch of people have destroyed the tires trying to get to a destination while it is flat. Not to mention a special tire machine is required to pull the tire and not mess up the rim. I'm 99% sure the po-dunk towns between here and Arizona do NOT have one of those machines, so a $60 spare is just cheap security for me and as far as the extra weight messing up my mileage, my Fender amp weighs more, so thats not an issue. Its just better to be safe than sorry for me. I have learned that ANYTHING can happen in the desert.

Hence the name of my (unofficial) bicycle team. Team SPARE TIRE.

I'm still working on my MA to get a damn spare. For every run-flat sucess story they quote, I can give them a situation I have either seen or been a part of that run-flats would have NOT made the distance.

The exclusion of a spare tire is just an addition to the list of things that the Company deem American drivers don't really need- Spare tire, safety triangle, first aid kit, etc...

I agree that, even with run-flat tires, there may be situations where a spare would be needed, such as getting a flat a long distance from any service area, or having the tire damaged in such a way that it was not usable. I doubt the few extra pounds for a spare tire and wheel would have a significant impact on MPG or performance. Since there's room, MINI should include one on every Clubman, along with the jack, etc...

I have a question regarding getting a spare for the Clubman S.

I had the JCW brakes on my '06 MCS, and had to go with 17" wheels to clear the larger calipers. Now, my understanding is the brakes on the new Cooper and Clubman S are the same units as the JCW brakes for the R53, so logically they would require 17s as well, but I severely doubt that donut spares come in that diameter.

So is it a situation of having to change two tires (put the donut on the back, move a back tire up front)? Or am I smoking crack about the brakes and the clearance issues?

Or just a simple nail in repairable location that the tireshop dumb**ck (that is a duck) tech destroys the bead on the tire and takes three days and two nights in a hotel to get a tire and back on the road. Yes out in the boonies.

Run-flats deliver when you get a flat, but once you stop to get it 'fixed', get ready to buck up and or wait. Spending $250-$350 a tire installed for RF's is incredibly expensive 'flat insurance' (a friend was quoted $435 for one at a dealer).

Yes you would probably have to do a two tire change (full size to the front, and donut on the back) if you got a flat in the front, not 100% about that but there would probably be clearance issues. But that would/should be the case too if you have the limited slip differential. It's never a good idea to run two different size tires on a LSD, as it will cause it to slip to make up the difference in tire sizes and you will burn it up in short order if you don't.

The donut spare I got is a 16" rim (its a factory Mini spare) and does not clear the front brakes calipers. So if I have a front wheel issue, Im changing 2 tires....rotating a good wheel to the front and running the spare in the rear. I would probably do that anyways so I don't cause any damage to the diff running2 different size tires for 100 miles or so...just to get out of the desert.

Again, I may be viewed as paranoid but I have been stuck in the desert, lying on my back fixing a tranny line on 120 degree asphault and swapping out boat trailer tires at midnight in the dark. I carry tools and take all precautions.
