Dealer mark-up?

I went to see the new clubmans this weekend and they had a dealer mark-up. For example, the MSRP on one was 24k but the dealer asking price was 26 something. thought mini wasn't supposed to have deal markups??

Don't pay it. There are more than a few that will sell to you for msrp.

+1 on that. I think its just plain wrong to charge a premium.

Some dealers mark up - others don't. MINIUSA has no control over what the individual dealers decide to sell at - it's unfortunate...

It pays to shop around - make phone calls, etc. There are MANY dealerships that don't mark up their models.

Let me guess... you're in California. I haven't heard of any markups on the east coast... they all seem to be doing it on the west coast.

im not planning to purchase a clubman, but even so theres no way i'd pay the markup. Yup, CA, pleasanton dealership. No markup on the coopers, but clubmans since there new. So anyone planning to buy one, I wouldnt go to pleasanton dealership.

No markups in the East Coast either. I paid MSRP for mine. People in CA and the west coast in general (Unless they are swimming in greenbacks) should do themselves a favor, and order from dealers that sell on a strict MSRP basis.

Again.... not on the east coast. I purchased a 6 series BMW convertible in 2005 and negotiated what I considered a fair price. On the BMW forums at that time the west coast dealers were getting $5,000 + over sticker price. I believe it must be a west coast thing. When buying my new clubman I did not pay MSRP

WHATEVER you do, don't pay mark-up. It's a waste when you can get M.S.R.P. elsewhere.

Buy and fly....>

I bought an '08 Corvette last July for invoice. The money I saved on the Doc fees alone that they wanted around here paid for 2 plane tickets to go pick the car up. The 900 mile ride home with my wife was a fun adventure...

Simply the law of supply and demand....

If the dealer can get the markup from a customer that just "Has to have it NOW"... well .. that's the way the game is played...

just consider the number of people buying the car vs.. the number of people that visit this forum....

That's what I was just talking about this morning with my co-worker. I helped my father negotiate a deal on his truck a couple years ago. We got a brand new Chevy Silverado with a $21K MSRP for $14K.

It's no wonder why the American car companies are tanking. They have way too many cars sitting on their lots. If they wanted to get MSRP, they'd cut back on inventory and do all (mostly) custom orders like MINI does.

Think about it. You don't negotiate when you order your meal in a restaurant. I'm sure you could negotiate if you were buying food that had been sitting around for a day and they had to get rid of it, but they're custom building that food for you. That being said, they don't charge you a markup to make you that food. The price you see is the price you pay. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Works for me.

I used to sell 'vettes in a stealership that charged anywhere from a $5K (over msrp) markup on a standard model to upwards of $15K on a Z01. now, did anyone actually PAY those markups? No, and boy did I get my **** chewed out by the general manager. I also remember markups on the trendy new Duramax P.U.s when they first came out, but did anyone pay those? No, and boy did I get my **** chewed out by the gm And when the Caddy XLR first came out there was a $5k markup, but did anyone pay that? No. And the gm fired my ****. haha his loss.

The moral of the story is that markups are a device used by dealerships to take advantage of newness and excluvisity to try and make profit on the one aspect of a car d'ship that makes the least money: new cars. That, and excessive prep/doc fees (anything over $60-80) are pure profit.
