Checker decal on Cabrio

I once saw a picture of a Cabrio with a checkerboard decal applied to that small area above the windshield, around the antenna, in front of the soft top. I have been searching for that photo ever since. I want to show a detailer an example of what I want to copy onto my Cabrio. I might even want to try this myself if I find a source for a checkered decal.

Can anyone help me with a link? Or, if you own such a checkered Cabrio, can you share your experience in its application? Pictures would be helpful, of course. Your experience with applying decals would also be useful.

It may have been my Mini that you saw. I got my decal from Cooper Flags & it was my 1st attempt at installing any graphics. It was very easy & came out looking great. Ed @ Cooper Flags will send you detailed application instructions that are easy to follow. They can do other designs up there for ya too

Bamatt, you did a nice job. Did you take off the antenna to apply the decal? Did you take off the moulding along the edges?

The directions Cooper Flags supplies are really good. Basically the decal is made to perfectly fit the area it goes. It has a hole in the middle of the decal for the antenna to fit thru. You basically clean the roof area & then wipe down with alcohol. Peel the decal backing off of 1/2 of the decal (center to side, aka antenna area to left or right pointy tip). Slide the decal over the antenna. Get an idea of decal placement (I took the top down & stood in my seats for the whole install) & kinda temporarily place it. Then squeegee it like hell to get any air bubbles out & get max adhesion. The decal is slightly larger than the area so you just squeegee it under the trim. The trim edges are very rubbery & lift up really easily.

Then remove the backing on the other 1/2 of the decal & repeat all of the above.

The only cutting you will have to do is around the antenna trim. you don't have to cut much but just a tiny bit to get a perfect fit. I used an exacto knife. It took me 30 minutes or so to install it. it was really easy. If I can do it anybody can

p.s...if the instructions you get disagree w/what I said go by the instructions as I am reciting from memory Also when you trim the decal a bit for the antenna you do this after it is installed & be very careful not to cut thru the decal & nick the antenna trim (like I did )

Here is the result of adding the checkers to my Cabrio with photos.

Let me share my experience: This was relatively easy. The product is well made and cut precisely to fit the area above the windshield. I have 2-3 crinkles in the vinyl but you can barely see them. Here are some hints in addition to the enclosed instructions.
  • I was worried that I had to fit the decal under the trim. I therefore removed the antenna to make the application easier. Big mistake, since the decal is precisely cut to fit the area around the antenna base and away from the molding. I had to replace the antenna prior to application because the antenna base is used to align the decal. Even if you misjudge slightly, you can stuff the decal easily under the rubber molding. I should have paid more attention to Bamatt.
  • Because the surface is curvilinear, scotch tape the application tape (this protects the top of the decal) 3-4 places along the top uppermost molding. This helps with the alignment. Shifting of the decal when I pulled off the liner (protects the sticky bottom part of the decal) caused the crinkles. You will remove the application tape and scotch tape after the decal is stuck to the body. Start at the antenna base.
  • Standing on the seats with an opened top was much easier than reaching over the hood.
Except for the hints above, the instructions were very good.

Doug
