R52 Does anyone elses top rattle?
Does anyone elses top rattle?
I have already had to have to plastic center bar replaced because of rattling and it still seems that when I go over a bumpy patch that center piece rattles and also somewhere in the rear of the car. With the top down there is no problem. Does anyone else experience this? I don't know if its the car or my car!
Mine is rattling too, both the center top passenger side center bar and maybe the rear glass (I know I can't see what rattles in there) but if you tap on my rear glass there is a tinkling sound. Just apparant now that the top is up so much because of the heat
me to
i get that same sqeak/rattle on the drivers side when the sunroof is open
very anoying ..hope it can be corrected
i am waiting for my 10 k in service
would love to hear if others had it ...and if it was corrected ...
let them check the isolation around the cables that run through this plastic center bar (they did with me, renewed the isolation and the problem was gone)

Since my first post I have had the car to the dealer no less than 3 times for all the rattling. They have fixed the noises coming from the center bar, but now I have it coming from the side of the passenger seat and from the back somewhere. I have finally figured out why they want you to keep the top down 90% of the time! This is extremely frustating as the car does not make a sound when the top is down.
Mine is in the top rear passenger area only in hot weather with the windows up.I have tried silicone no luck if I lower the rea window slightly it stops very annoying since my hard top mini never rattled.
DSA,
I have the same rattle as well and the dealer said that there is a service bulliten out on this for a part replacement, althought the parts are on backorder (for a change) so you should see the dealer about this.

I have the rattle - passenger-side only, and only when in sunroof mode... I rarely use this mode, but the noise is annoying.
I've also just started to notice the crescent-shaped scratches on the passenger-side rear quarter window...

I'm getting a rattle, now that the weather has gotten cooler. I'm thinking that the metals and pastics are shrinking ude to the drop in temperature. It is very anoying until I turn the radio/CD on. There was mention of a sevice bulletin. Did they say what the cause was from?
First rag top?
First time rag top owner?
I don't have a Cooper 'vert. But there is a rag top sports car in my driveway now, and over the years I've owned a Mustang and a VW rag top in addition to the one I've had for 11 years.
Convertibles squeak and rattle ... it is one of the joys of topless driving. To expect them to be as quiet as a hardtop is like expecting a Mini or MG not to leak oil. 1 in 10,000 maybe, but not the norm

So I guess you have never had a porsche, jaguar, or BMW convertible, as I have owned all three and I have not experienced the problems that I have with the mini. It was not my expectations to compare it with a MG. I also expected just a little better quality out of a BMW product.

In the 90's the VW 'vert was readily acknowledged as having a better constucted soft top than a Mercedes. The removal of the hard top introduces body flex primarily due to the fact that the car was not designed as a 'vert but a hard top that they sub' cut the top off. Couple that with all the rubber in the seals and you have squeeks. You have 20 years experience with rag tops and no squeeks? You must walk on water too. Even a ground up vert like the MX-5 has body flex...there just ain't enuf steel to prevent it.
Want quiet - don't buy a rag top. My suggestion - sell your MINI and buy a Bentley.
or
Try a little KY on the rubber parts and see how many noises go away.

. I really hope they can adjust your top for you idoc. Go to the dealer & have them work on it & if they try to tell you it is normal cry BS because mine is really amazingly quiet so I know it is possible. (sorry didn't mean to rub it in again MY2ndMINI

Thanks bamatt, and I hear ya. My car is going in on Tues for the 4th time. This time to replace pieces on the top of the rear window. It still rattles in the back and on the side, almost like the nuts were not tightened all the way. I know this is not normal because my friend has the same car and his top is as quiet as yours. I just don't know how many times I should let them try and fix it before I have to claim that its a lemon, or insist that they give me a new top. I know it has to be the top because with the top down it is perfectly quiet.
Thanks again

scary noise
was your scary noise a loud pop, mine did a few months ago and afterwards I had a piece of plastic cover trim on the passenger side always poping off. I glued it back in place but when I did I noticed that the fabric on the inside of the C pillar passenger side was not taught like the other side. When I took it to the dealer they found an elastic cord or strap on the inside C pillar had broken and the fabric was knocking off the trim piece. The fix was simple, but ever since this repair I've noticed that my top now has several rattles it didn't have before and the top doesn't close as smoothly as before.
Quiet Rag Top
I've owned a number of convertibles. So far my MINI is quieter than any other convert that I have owned. Mine is only two months old so perhaps things are still tight. A simple solution - Put the top down!

Halloween today.
