Tire Rotation Recommendations

2006 R52. The manual makes no mention of tire rotation at a specific interval. Is it recommended or needed? If so what is the pattern? Front to rear would be easiest due to not having a spare to use to help with the job.

Back in the archives are posts about this including one titled "how a 2X4 lifts a MINI" to get both wheels off the ground on the same side. In short back to front (or visa versa) same side. The R52 has camber on the wheels so they need to remain on that side

I'm looking at alignment specs and both front and rear have negative camber. The front nominal is -30' (+/-25') and the rear nominal is -1 deg 30' (+/-30'). When rotating the tires, the same tire surface (inner edge) still touches the ground, whether you go front to back or switch sides. I'm not sure why you couldn't swap sides??

I don't know if MINI changed specs, but the manual for my '03S says that tire rotation is not recommended. I have always rotated tires at about 5000 miles and continue to do it with my car anyway. If the tires are directional you should keep them on the same side or they end up going against the arrow marked on the sidewall.

It is not recommended because the tread wear may be different because of camber (as stated above) and may not have the same traction than before the rotation, at least temporarily. Most disregard.

Thanks for the info, I will probably rotate them regardless. I’m not driving at or near the limits so I think it’ll be fine.

OMG
Recommending to not rotate tires because of camber wear is the worst advice. You WANT to rotate the tires to help prevent excessive camber or toe wear.

First step, check your tires to see if you have directional tread or asymmetrical tread. Directional tread tires can only be rotated front to back on the same side. Asymmetrical tires can be swapped to the opposite side of the car. If you have directional tread, rotate front to back same side. If you have asymmetrical tread, rotate front wheels to opposite side rear, and rear tires to same side front.

A good time to rotate is spring or fall. If you have a second set of tires for winter, I will label the tires with chalk which corner they came off, and rotate in the spring when they go back on the car. Otherwise, every 10k to 15k miles.
